First off... Yes I am a female hair stylist. This does not mean I ONLY do female hair cuts

About 80% of my clientele is male. I loooove doing mens hair cuts and the relationships I have. Mens haircutting is very satisfying because if one wants to change their look we just have to wait 6-10 weeks to grow it out. Men are also amazing clients because they remain loyal for so long. A women will typically get her hair cut 4 to 6 times a year max. IF she gets color I see her every 8ish weeks depending on what color effects I do. Men on the other hand, I see every 4-8 weeks max. However the biggest difference between mens and women's haircuts are that men usually just say "I don't know what I want..." or "Your the professional, you decide!" I hate that men not only do not have the knoweldge about their hair but in this society are told to not care! YOUR HAIR IS YOUR CROWN!!!!!!!!!! So I wanted to give a quick lesson and pointers to forging your perfect crown.

First off there is a difference between a barber and a hair stylist.

A barber can use a straight razor with no guard and (typically) work majority with male clientelle..... Thats pretty much it. In my state to be a hair stylist you must take 1200 hours to apply for licensure testing. To become barber its usually ANOTHER 1000 hours to practice with straight razor and its needed! I've used them before and it scares the shit out of me to put a blade to someones neck but it makes a cleaner cut and taper. But we'll get on to that later. If you don't want a straight razor a practiced hair stylist might work just as well for you.

Also please before I start please dont take the shearto yourself. It never really ends well.

I have fixed SSSSOOO many do-it-yourselfs or mom-did-it or I-was-so-drunk-I-don't-remember-who-did-it. Then you end up paying anyways. I worked hard to become as talented at my job as I am.

Now first thing to look at is length.

Now length is very imporant to a mens hair cut and how it will be cut. If you want your sides and back of the head done under 1 1/2 inches I say you should absolutely do a clipper. The sizes of guards go from 10-00000. My zero guards do go from 0A (meaning just above a zero) to a 5 zero. then I have my trimmer which is as close as I can get without literally shaving your. Anything above an inch and half should be shears. Honestly for me anything above and inch should be shears as it is harder lines meaning piecey like in the pic above! Ask your hair stylist to measure your hair! We have a ruler on most of our combs!!!!!

Next is style and the amount of time you will be willing to put into your do

Now DO NOT come into a shop and say you want this without wanting to put in 5 tiny min to style your hair. It doesnt take long but if you cant do it then dont wear it. Its ok to not want to have a well put together look but then you can not expect these kinds of cut with out the effort on your hand. You cant buy a car and complain you need to put gas into it to take you somewhere!!!!!!!

Next you want to do it discuss your texture.

I FREAKING LOOOOVE curly hair on men. It can make the best styles. it also means more upkeep. Curly and straight hair can usually have the same cuts but the method is different and the results vary.

Next is tapering.

Now TAPER means that you get lower to the scalp as you get closer to the neck line. Meaning if you wanted a taper starting with say a 4. That would be above your partial bone (below your temple where it rounds out) then a 3 to your occipatal (bulgy bone in the back of you neck... you you are not an alien we all have them) then a 2 and your nape (neck hair line) this of course has "half steps" in between to blend. This fellow in black and white as a very sold look meaning little to no taper. But all mens hairstyles taper slightly as it adds a masculne edge.

This is a good example of a taper

See how it hugs the head? I think it provides better out growth so you keep that new hair cut look longer.

THIS IS A FADE

Now a fade i a more severe taper. It usually blends to a 0. But if you want this kind of tight 0 fade you can really not go any longer then 4 inches on top of your head with out if not being able to blend well.

For my bearded gentlemen

A beard is one of my favorite things. I love a lil scratchy sexy stubble, i love thick beards and everything in between. I suggest if you want a thicker beard to trim it not shave it every few days and apply an oil. But don't worry if you can grow one yet, that means you have a smaller chance of losing your hair. You win some you lose some. But if you do have a luscious bird nesting beard you MUST compliment it with your hair cut and have it almost reflect the size or shape on top or else you will look like an upside down candy corn

SIDE BURNS

Side burns is one place where men also say a lot "I DONT CARE." wellll you should. They sculpt your face. I say blend them out to give you a longer face shape, put them above or below your cheek bone to contour or take them high to square your face!

Another hidden treasure no man seems to care about.

Your neck line is imporant. I know you can't see it but we all can and its one of those subtle things that can tie your look together and you have to get it done anyways! Make them hate to see you go but love to watch you walk away! Now I usually do what ever will be the most natural out growth. A very important thing to remember is, its not how you leave looking today, its how you look 2 weeks from now.

Details

Again go for more subtle. If you want stripes or lines do it in the back. If you want a hard part (literally where i take a trimmer and shave it in for you) then go slow. It does not take long for it to grow back and it hard to blend out.

The last part of any hair cutting I do it facial hair

I'll do an oil or help the hair and have it not get imgrown hairs in the future and keep it lush. Then I will accentuate the jaw line. Who doesn't like a sexy jaw?

Finally product!

The thing men usually know or care the least about! The first step is to buy professional hair products SOLD IN A PROFESSIONAL SALON! If you buy american crew from walmart guess what? Its not quality. Its old, or counterfeit. There have been studies done showing that if you buy professional quality products you save money. It is more consentrated and doesnt have alchohol or other fillers. You use a 3rd as less if you fallow directions. It also saves you time by speeding up drying time and not having to BUY MORE PRODUCT that has probably expired anyways

Now the main differences

A gel based product is a hard hold meaning it dries stiff and usually crunchy. if you not using the right stuff it will cause build up and crumble in your hands. a wax based product (usually a pomade theres really not much of a difference now) was a flexible hold meaning you can touch it but it wont stay as well. Now finishes, shine means literally shine. I am not a fan as it looks like you can not touch it. A matte finish means no shine. I looove matte finishes and always use them. They make your hair look expensive and more natural. If you have curly hair use a wetter, creamier wax or pomade. For more hold apply dry, for less hold apply wet as some will avaporate.

Now styling is imporant.

Even the best cut can not be worn nice without the right styling. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG with a man using a blowdryer, dry shampoo (holy shit is that amazing but I cant get into that now) or anything else. We are all people and I love to groom. I think it's good for self asteam. Look how good cats are off!

THIS IS WHAT PRODUCT CAN DO!

You think Ryan Gossling just wakes up in his goose nest or what ever looking that god damn hot!? NO. He uses product....

Brows

DONT GO OVER BOARD!

But they can really help out

Again nothing is wrong with a man caring about his apearance. I do a lot of guys brows. I stay very natural, still I know guys are worried about seeming to femine for doing this. but I assure you no women has ever said "You know Kim... All I want is a big, sexy guy with a HUGE unibrow." But if you wanna rock it do it! Just never feel wierd about wanting them done. They frame and contour the face

Finally

In conclusion I hope you all enjoyed or learned a little something. I was going to write a career stories album but thought was actually more helpful. I know it was a lot but I really do enjoy my job and get the most out of it when I know someone feels and look amazing. I love my boys that have remained so loyal to me for hair cuts! My last bit of advice is please be nice to your barber/stylist. We stand for 7-12 hours a day non stop, listen to other peoples problems and truly care about you and your hair! If anyone has any questions I would love to answer! I dont need points I would just love it if someone saw this and understood and enjoyed something that they have to do all the time.

"Fam what you want ?" "I wanna feel like a safari hunting trophy" "Say no more"

PS I know my spelling errors are there. There is a reason I became a hairstylist.

But I'm Black... barely any of this applies to me

how many firsts are there?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

as a black dude I'm perplexed at how complicated white hair has to be

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Haha Op you'd hate me, i have long hair AND i cut it myself. :)

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Same here. Short hair just looks weird on me.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wish getting a haircut was as quick and easy as it is in gta

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Parietal* bone, Occipital* bone - Otherwise, i learned a lot!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And the occipital bone isn't on the neck. :/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a hairstylist, too. None of us can math. There IS a reason we chose a creative industry :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can we get a black hair edition of this post?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I get my hair cut once a year

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

But I'm bald.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Same:/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cut my own hair with a nail scissor for years. First cut every hair to 10cm and then shortened the sides and neck. Even did my SO thrice d:

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've also cut the hair of quite a few of my friends. Kinda helps being a designer and having an eye for what fits to different facial shapes

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

16 years since I last visited a hairdresser, been cutting my own hair for that long. By now I have a pretty good idea what works and not :)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

nail scissors are nice cuz they are sharp! just dont use anything dull cuz u can break the cuticle! im sure u do an awesome job :)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I cut my own hair too, but with a regular sewing scissors. I've been doing it about a year and a half. The hardest part is the back

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the post! Read the whole thing and found it very informative.

10 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 3

Girls like touching my hair (it's thick) so this is very helpful.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm a guy and I appreciate a hairstylist as enthusiastic as you. I'm really picky about my hair & love it when the person who cuts is too.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I just shave my head in the bathroom

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then I let it grow for a few months and do it again.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do it about twice a month

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"To the top of the ears again?" "Yup thanks Wendy" is the extent to which I think about my hairstyle.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

What about guys with super long hair? I have that and none of this applies to me because I can't grow a beard, either.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cut it?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

You vastly over-estimate how much an average man is willing (or able) to spend on a regular basis. I'm sure you're very good (& expensive.)

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Seriously, many guys here probably really appreciate this info, but there's one group you've missed out who would appreciate it more.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

ehhh my hair cuts for men aint that expensive. about $20 if i wash and style em. i see the same guy every month or every other month.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

That's cheap, my stylist now charges $30 and I tip. I usually go once a month, minimum. Twice if I have an event and need cleaned up.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is what I pay for a haircut and a beard trim at my barber and I see him about every 3-4 weeks.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd actually pay that. Tried a salon and payed around $40 and they didn't do any better than BoRics, so after twice I said fuck it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where do you live? I pay triple that (in £) for barely a cut.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't go to a stylist anymore because I don't typically wish to speak to this stranger about my personal life. Can we just get to bidness?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I hate small talk too but I'm a girl with long hair :(. You don't care about my life I don't care about yours let's not pretend pls! Lol

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ya im a chatty stylist but some dont like that so i shut the fick up and concentrate. bring a book and they wont bother u w small talk

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I don't intend to be rude, but I just avoid that nonsense like the plague. shave my head at home now. Thank you for responding :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

your not rud/e at all. do your shit. im just hoping someone might be like "oh bring a book

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dry shampoo? Vat is das?

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

amazing shit. its shower in a can

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Holy Shit. I never need to shower again.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks! I'll try to get some. Btw in the last 20 minutes since I saw your post, I've gotten myself a booking with a stylist. Going in 1h

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

You are well on your way emulating being an astronaut living aboard the ISS, just saying

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Was ist das. Sorry, I can't help it.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

German language Nazi... can't help it either

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hahaha!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great read...but I'm still going to stick to my own s**ty haircuts.

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 3

This. If you don't care that much a clipper haircut is fairly doable. You'll get better at it over time, be able to play with it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey! I'm also a Dylan who cuts his own hair.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I shave mine once every six months or so.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh if only I could find a hair dresser/stylist/person who cared this much. I haven't like any of the ones I've been to in years.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm a hairstylist, this makes me sad! It could be the type of salon you're visiting, try a more premium place. You get what you pay for.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not around Sydney are you? Tried a few in Qld and Sydney since moving. Haven't had a good one since my ex's sister.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And I obviously can't go there anymore!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live in Michigan, US. I wish there was some way I could help! Best of luck!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Next time I'm in MI I'll swing by for a haircut

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And a beer too, I hope! We were voted Beer City USA. Come to Grand Rapids and I'll get you fixed up with a good haircut and a pint any day!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uh oh, so my American crew wax ordered out of Amazon might be fake? :( It seems ok to me

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No way they are putting bad product in the biggest retail chain (Walmart) and the biggest online store (Amazon, make sure sold by Amazon)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fellow hairstylist here. Product displacement is a huge problem in our industry. I'd also only recommend buying product from a salon.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

it might be real. but i kinda doubt it. its probably old meaning it will dry out faster. use it up then go to your local salon!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

We have bumble and bumble, and Kerestase. I die when people tell me they're buying that shit online. Enjoy your bottle of mystery goo!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I buy American Crew from a salon, is it safe?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a black dude with a shaggy fro, what is all this?

10 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

I wish there was more info for us. It's hard as hell to describe what I want.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

A black man called buttercup? I can dig it

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

SEXYbuttercup, thank you very much.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Awesome! I'm a dude that for 34 years, just found a barber i trusted and said, "do what you think will look good. " no more.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Haha I did it everytime. Guess no more! I thought it was a good thing g to say that she is the professional. If you are a hairstylist:SORRY

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get mine cut about twice a year. Either I'm lucky or I get good hair stylists, because it looks great short and grows out well. No prefs.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's the best things to do if you aren't sure what you want. They'll always fix you up, you're walking advertisement for them.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As someone who started going bald at 21 and still can't grow a beard in his 30s, your comments hurt me deeply. :(

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

I too need tips for styles which mask the ol' receding hairline

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Time for Lex Luthor mode.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I'm a 26 year old woman going gray on my head, and growing black hairs on my chin. Lets switch pls. $114 a month just to color this shit...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dress sharp as fuck.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My hairline has been retreating like the french for the last 3 years... im only 22 :( Also, definitely cant grow a beard.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'm 18 and have a very visible receding hairline. No good options since shaving it off would look ridiculous. Just gotta deal with it. :/

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See if skinhead works for you? "Bald" is always more appealing than "balding". See Patric Stuart, Vin Diesel, Samuel L Jackson, Bruce Willis

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jason Stathom.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just shave my head. Fuck haircuts.

10 years ago | Likes 258 Dislikes 12

Hear, hear, brother. Well, most of my head is just bald, but that's irrelevant!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bald FTW

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Mah nigga..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use bare clippers for my head, I'm particular about my beard. Fine scissors, straight razor, home-made oil, the works.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't exactly shave it, but a flat buzz across the whole head gets the job done.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Language.

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 8

English i think. You're welcome!

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Yup. I could never figure out what to do with it, anyway. Simplified morning routine, wear hats and helmets whenever I feel like it. Save $$

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My head started to shave itself, its like magic or something

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

#2 guard buzz cut over the entire thing. Quick, easy, cheap.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

EXACTLY what I do.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

gilette mach #3

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

#3 here, high speed low drag

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

#2 for life!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 Upvote clippers. #5 guard from the back, #7 from the front, Wahl (sometimes knock in down to shorter combs) 30 years & counting so far

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 right down to the wood. They always ask me if that is what I actually want. Like no bitch I want a fucking mohawk, now shave my head.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Get clippers and diy. It it'll save you a ton of money. I've given my husband and son clipper cuts for the last 2 years.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Last time I asked for a mohawk, she didn't take me seriously

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too. Haven't been to the barber in years. It's fantastic.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'd shave my head too if only I didn't look like an alien fetus.

10 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 0

Oh fuck that's rich hahahahah

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

HAHAHAHAHAHHHA

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

You might be shaving off a bit too much.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I got a lumpy head and i still go zero, fuck it, so much less hassle to maintain

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I just go for the method of "Never cut your hair" fuck haircuts

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have celtic tattoos. I don't want to look like a neo nazi. Sad.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hasn't stopped me Lol

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Likewise, but I do so because I'm running out of hair to grow.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Same here, but now I'm happy with it. So much easier, hair never gets messed up, never have to pay for a haircut again.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep started losing my hair @ 23. Just said fuck it and shaved it off. I don't have a mailbox head either, which is a plus.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i feel your pain.. once mine started receding i just buzzed the entire lot. Its all or nothing

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I starting shaving my head before my hairline gave me no choice.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's right! Show Mother Nature who's boss!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I shave mine, too. I feel soooo much better bald than when my hair was thinning and it looked like shite. Bald is beautiful.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wish I could get this mindset. My hair is thinning and I buzzed it with a zero, but ended up growing it back out when applying for jobs.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I shave mine whenever I shower. It's much easier than one would think and it's also pretty damn safe. Try using a Gillette sometime! :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The last time I paid for a haircut was in 2006.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Me too! I used to buzz it, now I just let it grow, its a 18" ish pony tail now

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1987 lol

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No guard, blade on the lowest setting.....so bald.....I go bald but I have saved sooooo much money in the long run

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Can...you do one of these for girls? I have no idea how to talk to my stylist and I feel like this would help...

10 years ago | Likes 800 Dislikes 4

I always bring at least 3 pictures of hair that I like: front, back, and side view. And then I discuss with her whether or not it will work

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. As a girl, I usually just walk in, plop myself in a chair and ask them to do whatever they want.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Yupp....or 'um...take off this much and something something long layers?'

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes, this. EXACTLY this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is entirely why I don't go as often as I should. HALP

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Get a new stylist, no really. Your stylist should know who u are and you should have a relationship with them

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I had a stylist that i liked and trusted but she doesnt work at the same place anymore, in fact all the stylists are different ppl

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel your pain. I missed the part of gender norm class where they teach you how to speak hair.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There was a class? No wonder Im so clueless. :(

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oooo and a bit about products as well. I am such a filthy casual when it comes to my hair. =(

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Would appreciate. Only girl in my family, learned nothing about hair stuff from my mom, have no vocabulary for talking to my stylist.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is exactly the issue, I'm not sure of the vocabulary. Sometimes the things they say sound intimidating or extreme and I misunderstand.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seriously! How do girls get their hair cut so nice. I don't know how to explain the style I want to the stylist or the options are.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of people say to show a picture, right? Then you don't have to explain...but I'm awful at imagining the picture...on me.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now you know that's a loaded question.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Lawls

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not a hair dresser, but there's a naturally tan-skinned girl with darker eyebrows and silver hair at my school and she looks awesome!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Please do one for short hair on women. I really want to do my guy length. Also, maybe a tutorial to see what style fits a person?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think she means a guide on how to choose a haircut/style for women. I have no idea how to style mine at all - maybe you could help us?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have short hair and LOVE it. It has been easier to go to a barber at times bc he knows what I want. I will be using this for reference now

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think @Loadedquestion is asking if you can do a similar album of hairstyle lessons for women

10 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

Yes

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

As a female, i have been thinking about a fade. but really thick hair, (or at least thinner hair that's SUPER dense.)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you cut curly hair in women? If so, I will sell you my soul for a good haircut.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

You have to find the stylist that fits with you! Curly hair can be trial and error on some clients. It takes time to find your hair's quirks

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too! Hair appointment tomorrow, the anxiety has already set in

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I may look a fool for asking this, I'm a lady and my hair styling is showering and shaking my head a bit. I'm clueless. Share the love? :)

I think she wants an album on haircuts for women. I personally never know what I can do with my long curly hair.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

See...not a clue what that meant. lol

10 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 1

Did you mean that you want one of these for ALL ladies hair styles, not fades? Because I feel like that's what you meant.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That is exactly what I meant.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also a stylist. Feel free to message me if you want some one on one questions answered!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

haha well read my album. a fade or taper gets shorter as it gets closer to the lower hair line. Like rihanas short cut

10 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 3

As a woman who is balding. What do you recommend? :\

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nioxin!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've had two communication mishaps with stylists. I once left as a flapper... Once as Joe Dirt.

I always take my brother to get his hair done cuz he has like no clue and i don't want him to look like shit. Ask a sister or a lady friend?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a great sister you are. I followed my female friend opinion. Two block haircut.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just ask her. Make sure it's a her... They know what will make you look good.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ears free, shorter in summer, longer in winter ; 3x in a year. ; only go when you cant hear enough ; enough said.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I always tell my main concerns: Namely around my ears... and for the rest I tell them to try whatever they think would be best.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes I go to a barber and tell them to do what they think is "me" and I always leave satisfied

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well handsome fucker like you people can pull off any hair style. :P

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've been cutting my own hair for years and it comes out fine. She makes it sounds like that's a sin

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is when the vast majority of people do it and make it look awful, because when they go in all it means is more work for the stylist tofix

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always go for a fade but then again I've had the same hair cut for 25 years

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It took me until my late 20's to figure out what style works best for me. A 0 to a 1, high and tight fade and leave the length on top.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have the guts to try some on. Worst case scenario, you end up with a buzz-cut.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've had the same dead-simple whiteboy haircut since I was five but I still managed to get it fucked up last time.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I dont get a choice. friend does it for free to practice clipper cuts. I get the Abercrombie and I hate it but anything to help and its free

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i find that i look better bald so I go to a barber, and get ,my hair cut every four months

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep, I had these exact issues. I've never had a preferred style, so I stop caring and now I have a ponytail. Looks mediocre, but it works.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, I have no idea what suits, but I feel like my stylist nails it every time

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wear mine in a fauxhawk mostly. It fits my head and hairline, and I like the way it looks. Sucks that some people don't but it works.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For someone like yourself, (I'm a guy) I would tell you stylist that you want some ideas because you're not sure what fits you, this 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

Worked for me. She made a suggestion, I went with it and got a lot of compliments. Rule of thumb, classic haircuts always look good.

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

a good classic haircut is like a good suit

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

just got haircut. my hair is straight, thick and poofy. no one ever knows how to cut my hair and therefore i have no idea what look good.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I honestly don't care. Used to wait years to cut my hair, now days into every few weeks and let my friend practice whatever she wants.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly this.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just want a hairstyle where I don't look like a slob. That's why I always get my haircut every 4 weeks to keep it manageable and lookable.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't either for years. Then my sister became a hair stylist. She took it upon herself to figure out a good style for me.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My barber, Sweeney Todd, down of Fleet Street gives me a style thats always breathtaking.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What you should do is figure out what shape your face is (there are tests online) and then google good haircuts for that face shape. :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where can i do it?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://face-shape.com/ Here's one site, but if you just google 'determining face shape" there's a whole bunch of them.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

how to talk to your barber: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw4JP3bEvng

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The problem with that guide is the fact that it requires me to have any idea how I like my hair, when I just wash it and hope for the best

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I once told my barber to leave 2 inches on the top and somehow left with only a half inch. I would have stopped him but I can't see (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

without my glasses (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

this, so much. until i started wearing contacts, i'd just go in, sit down and hope.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. I have a double crown and the last time I tried to explain that to a barber he huffed and rolled his eyes. Ended up looking like 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Alfalfa for the next month and a half. That was the last time I had a man cut my hair.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's a part of it, too. I went through a LOT of ladies who'd just do what they wanted with my hair. A LOT.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Took me a while to find a lady who knew what she was doing and could take my vague requests and turn my hair into something awesome.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everytime my husband got his hair cut they did this. I got a clipper set on amazon and watched some YouTube videos and been doing it since.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why if I want them to cut off two inches, I'll say one inch. x_x It's the only way to protect my hair.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't think there WERE any styles for guys with curly hair... in fact, I still don't. Will Ferrell is not a style.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Will Ferrell is the best style! :D

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My hair looks just awful when it's that short though :( so I go for the "10 Things I Hate About You" Ledger look kinda.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't know? Acquire lady friends, ask them. They may vary widely. Use their opinions as guidelines to what makes you fell most comfortable.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

How am I supposed to get pals with ridiculous hair? Also, my friends usually say "Idk I'm not good at this." Does this mean there's no hope?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh? Just acquire lady friends? Lemme just hop into my lady friend cannon and fire off into lady friend world.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

It is fucking easy to acquire ladyfriends. Just be nice to them, help them. Do them favours, ask them favours. Best thing? Make them laugh.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, I thought you meant ask them to cut your hair.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TALK to your stylist! Ask them what they think. The girl at Great Clips is NOT a stylist

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lies! She may may Asian in her 50s hut she has still got it

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Point being that Great Clips is more concerned with the volume of hair cut and not the quality. Source: my stylist

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Absolutely it's standard big business where revenue is the main concern. Stylists get payed less people get less taken care of.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Point continued: if you want the person cutting your hair to care about your hair you need to go to an actual salon and pay more

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you. Great Clips is my personal hell.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone with a majestic beard and barely bunnable hair, what do you recommend? It's not that we don't care, sometimes we just don't know

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought I was smart not spending on cut but shampoo and whatnot is getting expensive too. (The real problem was shitty hairworkers though)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Just a Question i have a hard time with what kind of hair style would work best for me with my thick black hair and Goatee

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Last time i went to a male hairstylist i showed a picture out of one of the books at the salon. He gave me a buzz cut.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What products would you recommend to a woman with highly textured curly hair? I find even salon shampoo is too drying right now and use 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

avocado or olive oil as a leave in to help. My hair has slightly kinky quality in places and goes into tight spiraled ringlets.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for this great post! I feel lost every time I get a cut, and this will help me out a lot!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What're your thoughts on long-hair dudes? Any different advice when guys do shoulder, chest, or waist-length?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have long hair and a full beard, to be honest I have absolutely no idea how to take care of them :/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I appreciate the thought and effort you put into this, but for my basic haircut (not styling) I still don't know what to tell them.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This lasts for two days. A week, tops. I'm not paying for something purely cosmetic if it doesn't even last.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah this is good, thanks for your post. Good to know these sort of things, now all I need is some cash to get something properly done :P

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm going to get a haircut tomorrow and I still don't understand shit and the barber will probably screw it up but that'll also be my fault.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I cut my own hair, taught myself, and I have never been unhappy with it. Every time people have been surprised that I did it myself.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually really helped me out. Growing my hair out and going to actually start doing something with it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My hair stylist and I became best friends, and knew she was the one when she nailed my curly thick hair. Relocated and we still talk :D

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What oil are you suppose to use after trimming your beard? to make fuller

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Beard oil. Comes in several scents. I use daily.

my kid's 13 and doesn't really care about this yet but he will so thanks! he's got like 5 cowlicks on his crown - any style tips for those?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mother loves my curly hair. She says it's very easy to cut as it just springs right back. What do you believe? Also, that is a good do.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I am a man and have a female stylist. Best. Decision. Ever. Always makes me look good for the ladies!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mom is a hairstylist and I grew up in salons... I honestly just have problems letting other people cut my hair I look a mess.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did no one tell you that people lose interest in reading when the author write like SHIT? Seriously, too many fuck ups!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What wax would you suggest for a nice matte finish and strong hold?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"can really not go any longer thAn 4 inches on top of your head" than.. than than than

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any suggestions for how to deal with a receding hairline? (thick hair except for the fact that I now look like I have a deep widows peek)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey OP! I have very fine, very straight hair, and an oval face. Products don't seem to do much, and I'm getting sick of the Beatles. Advice?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Male or female? Oval faces can get away with just about any cut. I use a Paul Mitchell vollumizing spray, works wonders for volume.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Male. And thank you! I may try that. It would be nice to not have hair-stuck-to-head syndrome anymore.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your welcome. Try using dove dry shampoo between washes. Just follow the directions, it will give you volume too.

Any advice on finding a good hair stylist for men? I've been to so many and they all seem to act like I'm bothering them by getting a cut.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Go to a men-focused salon like Sports Clips. If someone is rude, don't tip them and get someone else next time.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well they sound like they suck. call the salon and ask whos the best at mens hair

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have super thick fluffy hair. How do I explain that I need it to be the same length just less fluffy?

As a hairstylist, THANKYOU! I feel like I spew this stuff all day to deaf ears.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this helped immensely. i have real long hair(bout a foot) and am looking to get it cut soon. and i also have a fantastic beard. thanks OP!

I'm thinking about changing my do to a more Captain America guy look but don't know what gair gel or whatever to use. Help?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is wrong with assuming a profesional knows more about what looks good?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Good and bad depends on personal tastes and social constructions so it really depends on the person, there isn´t a rule for it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably nothing, but in my case they really don't. I've cut my own hair for 5+ years, and it looks spectacular. Hairdressers fuck it up.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where are you OP? My husband NEEDS you! *builds hair emergency batsignal*

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dear OP as a young man who severely loves his hair what can I do if my hair is starting to fall out? Please, anything I'd be very grateful

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rogaine. Propecia. Or, if you don't want to grow boobs, caffeine shampoo. Caffeine stimulates growth while inhibiting DHT w/o side effects

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But you're not the op, how can I trust?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Google it?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tell me how to get Ryan gosling hair

10 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 3

Instructions unclear: Followed your advice yet still do not look like Ryan Gosling.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Step 1: Be beautiful.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

You think he just wakes up in his goose nest like that?!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

First you need Ryan Gosling face

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2
