Mouse Guard is a comic, by David Petersen, set in a world of sentient mice who live in a medieval era, paralleling the same age in human history, though in their world there are no humans. Its stories revolve around a brotherhood of mice known as the "Mouse Guard" who have sworn an oath to serve their fellow civilian mice in times of need, including making safe passage for them through the wilderness and protecting them from predators.

hungmung
And now I want to go play Mice and Mystics.
thalass
Holy crap I didn't realize Mouse Guard was a comic. I was bummed when the movie/show/game(?) was cancelled.
weeshful
mouseguard stories are told 90% in pictures, and 10% words. Peterson doesn't use a word when a full page spread will do
IWouldLikeToGetOffThisRideNowPlease
So... so redwall then?

I own three original pages from Mouse Guard #2. David was selling them to pay for his trip to Wizard World Chicago the first year he went.

Although given how slow his output is, I'm pretty sure at this point his career is just going to comic conventions.
fuzzybelly
They were going to make a movie, but sadly it was cancelled. Seth Engstrom did wonderful concept art for it https://imgur.com/jurSKVM

Disney bought Fox, and scrapped the whole thing even though everything was ready to go. Super sad.
Deepfire007
There also is an excellent RPG for it …
Totallynotaburglar
Check out mice and mystic if you're into simple dungeon crawler board games
LuncheonsAndDragons
Misread that speech bubble as "WOOT WOOT"

David Petersen is a super nice guy who is a blast to hang out with and, like many others, was screwed over by Disney.

I've read the first one or two books and they were great. Highly recommend it!
SteamyVents316
Gorgeous books, and interesting story from what I’ve read so far! Thanks for the reminder to check for more!
TheSkyIsSoPretty
I feel like I read a book just like these illustrations. the most I remeber is when a mouse gets torn apart by crabs sacrificing himself.
TheSkyIsSoPretty
the mouse was a sailor type mouse he had a fishing spear too

NZSheeps
VERY different.
MadeThisAccountToAnswerQuestions
Looks like it took a lot of inspiration from Brian Jacques' Redwall series. I bet it's pretty good!
SnowMongoose
"Inspiration" is a nice way of putting it.
DoomHammer67
Mouse Guard has also release a tabletop RPG.

Slothhugswanted
Thank you! I've been trying to remember the name so I can gift the series to a friend who loves them.
zachzilla1
Couldn't think of the name. Thanks
Xedinah
That’s exactly what I first thought it was!
hannahgrace110
I thought it was art for that series. Loved it as a kid

Brilliant series, originally written to be rich in imagery so it could be read to blind children.

This looks different, but I’m sure it’s at least partially inspired by Redwall
ScottishOddish
Can I just say how happy I am that imgur has a healthy Redwall fandom? I spent so much of my life alone in my love for the series.
Twip4782
I remember this show as a child, at 30(today) I just watched the first 3 episodes...this show was for kids?
AnxiaTeaDD
I loved those books. Re-read the hell out of them. I always wrote to Brian Jacques fan club and they would send me back art and bookmarks
Islander255
Very fond of the series. Jacques did follow a pretty rigid formula, but damned if it didn't work every time. I read up to book 17.
Islander255
Also, his book tour came through my library, and me & my twin got our copies of Redwall and Mossflower signed :)
jellybeanzjellybeanz
I hear you. No one else I knew had even heard of Redwall, much less read any of the books. Warbeak was always my favourite character.
Boradorehimself
Wasn’t that the angry bird that wanted to fight and kill everything? I read them so often they often blend into each other

Absolutely loved the series, have well over a dozen of the books! Have some great memories of going to chapters to pick up the next one 1/2

Did you have a favorite book? I really enjoyed Mossflower, Lord Brocktree, the Long Patrol and Pearls of Lutra 2/2
Camelspotting
One of my most special possessions is a beautiful hardback Mossflower that my dad gave me when I was a kid.
ScottishOddish
I loved Salamadastron, Mareul, and Martin the Warrior
EndersdoyouthinkthisisafuckingGame
I've read all his books, I think Taggerung, Pearls of Lutra, and Marlfox are my favorites.
