Semi was apparently tailgating the car ahead of him, car stopped, semi didn't stop fast enough, people died.

Not following the three second rule has consequences

Recently, after a discussion with a mentally deficient Imgurian who believes that ONE CAR LENGTH is enough following distance between cars going AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS to facilitate a safe emergency stop, I figured I'd make this post to provide some info and encourage people to not drive like idiots.

At 60mph, it takes roughly 150 feet (half a football field) OR MORE to come to a complete stop. It takes around a second for a driver to register that the car in front of them has hit the brakes, and to hit the brakes themselves, and a total of 4 seconds plus to come to a stop.

The one car length is about 15 feet. With some math, 60mph is about 88 feet per second. You will travel 15 feet in 0.17 seconds. Recall that it takes one second for a person to register that the car ahead of them is stopping and to hit the brakes.

By the time you have even realized the person is stopping, you've already rammed into the back of them, possibly seriously injuring or killing those people, as well as yourself.

Don't be dumb, drive safe, take into account what you're driving, weather, speed, and reaction time when determining a safe following distance between you and the car ahead of you. And wear your seatbelt.

Such is the fate of those who don't use their turn signal and can't stay in a lane.

And use your fucking blinker!

FUCKING THANK YOU! I try to tell my friend this all the time. He continues to drive like a reckless maniac and tailgate so I don't ride w/

him anymore. 2/2

Sometimes the life you save may be your own lol

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also don't cut across 4 lanes of traffic

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

I mean it's not like you can't hit an interchange or find another way to get where you're going.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Exactly! It's not worth the risk

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Three-second rule is adjustable. Sans-jam, I add another for conditions, an extra for nighttime/visibility, and a spare for driving trucks.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Obviously you won't always be in a position to maintain time-distance, but no reason not to if you can.

A school bus decided to eat my ass on the freeway today. It was anxiety inducing

9 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 0

Was it a "magic school bus"?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pics?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sadly, these days I have yet to see a smart school bus driver. Too many feel they have priority, and drive reckless even with people onboard

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've always wanted to make an "airbag test in x seconds" electronic countdown sign for the rear window.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Get the bus number, call the bus garage, report the driver.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really? I feel like a large portion of imgurians would enjoy their asses being eaten...

9 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 5

Well, not on the freeway. Violently. At speed. o_O

Brake taps usually fix that type of person right up (if you dont mind the possibility of seriously hurting someone else.)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

find the spot in the pedal's travel where the lights come on but the brakes haven't quite engaged yet. Usually much wider on older cars.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

just slow down very gently and speed up very gently, repeat. no brake light involved. more safe and more annoying.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I usually just flash my hazard lights for one tick. Same result as rear lights without the slowing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can only SMH when I hear what percentage of drivers believe that they're a much better/safer driver than average. The last report I 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

read found that 93% of American drivers believed themselves to be better than most other drivers. Kinda scary!

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

So true! I'm a much better driver than most people!

He's right IF and ONLY if the car in front of you instantly becomes a concrete abutment. Not watching what's going on well in front of you..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and defensively anticipating traffic is what will kill you at highway speeds regardless of gap.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fixed

(On mobile)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What exactly did you fix by posting the exact same image a second time?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Fixes it on mobile. Overlay instead of a new tab opening.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Now one can see the image without clicking a link.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

The app makes a difference there? For Desktop, it's the same thing, both open in an overlay.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Then I guess so, I was on app, and the parent comment was just a link.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think so, notice the second link has the .jpg on the end. I'm on pc, so I don't know for sure.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No one died. The woman noticed the exit too late and made a stupid manouvre. Unfortunately she did not see the line of trucks&cars waiting.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Believe she broke some bones but she lived, happened not too far from where I live.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exits are marked in advance; she came from the far left lane. She couldn't see trucks because she's fucking stupid.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Are you sure? It looks like the truck runs over the car like a speed bump...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's I was wondering. I assumed the person died. It looks awful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Humans are - collectively - terrible drivers. We should probably let the robots take that over because they will absolutely do a better job.

9 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

Top pic scares me cuz last month this same thing happened to me but luckily my exit was next, truck was 1ft from bumper during rush hour

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had an RN complain to the CIO that her computer didn't update. She had shut it off for the weekend. I've given up on "Don't be a dumbass"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My first thought on this is that it was completely the cars fault, semis very rarely cause th accident

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 6

I keep 100m distance at that speed, but yes... I don't see how is truck's fault in the gif. It was out of his control.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Truck drivers are guilty until proven innocent

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But if they do run into a traffic jam, it often causes multiple casualties. First pic looks like car smashed betwenn two trucks to me.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

yes it does. Pancaked.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's why America needs to adopt the zipper method from Germany, you get in the lane you need to be in and fucking stay there.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I always say there are three things you can't 'beat': death, taxes and traffic. Lane changers always fall behind in the long run

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We've only been doing that in the US since there were more than three cars on the road. Assholes will be assholes.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

ALSO, it's not just texting that's dangerous and irresponsible - messing with the radio, reaching for the cheeto that fell on the floor...

9 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 1

Preach. I'm so much more dangerous driving with a Taco Bell burrito than I've ever been with a phone

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Calling, texting ffs :(

I (irresponsible one) just rear-ended a guy who stopped suddenly, b/c I was reaching for something on the passenger seat. $4300 @ body shop

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Its also dangerous to drive hungry. So grab that cheeto

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

only ifthe car is stopped/parked

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got rear-ended by a guy who reached over to grab a truck stop sandwich on his passenger seat. Poor sandwich.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

it's illegal to drive and eat/drink in the UK, not everyone seems to be aware of this.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

In the US there may be local ordinances, but its not a law: http://blogs.findlaw.com/law_and_life/2014/01/is-it-legal-to-eat-and-drive.html

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aw shit now you've given the f#cking Caliornia legislators new shit to make illegal...they'll pe passing that now...F$CK

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait... Since when? But... Really? Then... What are the cup holders for? My mind is actually blown.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They're there to transport the cups only. And since when did car manufacturers make law-abiding cars, looking at you diesel cars!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah yes... I see now! But why isn't this more advertised/mentioned? I have literally never heard of it and been driving for a decade.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only if it's deemed careless driving. But it's still daft https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/know-how/driving-myths-your-questions-answered/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In fact lots of these are stupid. Wearing headphones and driving is one I personally hate. How are they possibly going to hear others?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When in doubt i just assume everything is illegal in the UK, that goes double for Australia.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is what @op is talking about the 3 second rule. 3 seconds to pick up that cheeto.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Now people are going to believe you and do this. MANAGE YOUR DAMN CHEETOS!! And no spaghetti or cereal while you're driving.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually saw someone eating from a bowl of cereal while driving a car when i was waiting to cross a street.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's crazy!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tried to point this out to other people nearby and nobody seemed to care.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

IKR I keep reminding mysalf to leave the fleshlight at home...I'M WORKING ON IT OK?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And driving sleep deprived is probably just as bad as driving drunk

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Mythbusters claims it's much worse

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Got in an accident once because I was sleep deprived. It's no joke. Luckily no one was hurt.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yep. Stayed awake 4 days in college once, got behind the wheel. I do not remember getting home.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Was on a road trip with my boss and was confused as to why he was pulling over on a highway, looked over and he was asleep. Holy fuck.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But what am I supposed to do without my driving Cheetos?

9 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

Just try and keep yourself busy so you don't think about it. I find watching movies to really help with this.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hold the bag on your lap, man.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It's so simple, it just might work.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What we need is a chip clip with a suction cup mount so you can clip the bag open then stick it to your window. Or a horse-type feed bag.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would probably crash if I saw someone with a Cheeto bag strapped to their face while driving lol.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've finally come to the realization that my super aggressive driving will either kill me, someone else, or both. I'm trying to slow down.

9 years ago | Likes 149 Dislikes 6

It is not fast, aggressive drivers causing accidents. SLOW drivers cause collisions. Multiple studies and the autobahn confirms. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

People that drive slow in the left lane are breaking the law. It is not your responsibility to regulate OTHERS speed. Post otherwise acurate

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

If you listen to music while driving (I don't, it's distracting), try something that calms you.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I tend to listen to death metal

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That may be part of the problem. You don't want anything that amps you up, not while driving, anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I try to be at the back of the pack when driving. That way I can see all the idiots when they fuck up and make decisions to keep me safe.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Actually WORST place to be. You shouldn't be ANYWHERE near a pack of drivers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is no try, either do or die - good luck, we're all in this together

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had this realization before I turned 20. I ran some old lady off the road, and finally realized freaking out other drivers is a bad idea.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's really no reason to drive aggressively and plenty to drive carefully. Save fuel, maintenance costs and still get there the same time

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yeah I wish people would time themselves with their normal style and again with a 'no lane change rule' on their way to work

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Use Waze...religiously. I did and realized that *hyper-aggressive* (90+ on an empty 70 zone) gained me <1 minute over 11 miles. Not worth it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Conversely, drove *exactly* the speed limit for a month. Saved $11 in gas. Wasted 4 extra hours in traffic. Limit+7 is the sweet spot.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Recommend learning defensive driving techniques and even taking courses.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Good for you. Do it!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My rule of thumb is never trust anyone else on the road. It's kept me alive so far.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Always imagine you would eventually kill a toddler in another car. He dies while you try first aid and the mother is stuck in her car...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You should hurry up to slow down.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Hurry up and wait." People sitting at the next red light that passed you 2 minutes ago.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

please stop your dick head driving thanks

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

*going to slow down

9 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 2

One way or another they will slow down. It may just be abrupt is all.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

And thankyou BTW.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Easy fix: do the math on driving 15mph over compared to leaving 4 minutes earlier. Turns out its really hard to make up time. Leave early.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I don't drive aggressively because I'm late. I do it because I'm impatient and have no self control. I'm a jerk. I know it.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

..... And I'm doing my best to control my shitty choices.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Only works if you can do math. Works against you on long trips.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It feels fine going 30mph in a 15mph zone, but wrong going 80mph in a 65mph zone. My long trips have higher limits, maybe its why math fails

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In California our freeways post 75mph and slow people go 80mph. Fast people go over 100mph. Insane people go over 160mph.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have personally been at 130mph for several minutes because in some areas you just can. That's also my car's limiter.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Please do. Aggressive drivers are the reason why I'm scared of driving.

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 5

If you are scared of driving you should NOT be driving.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's all reaction times and how well you scan your environment. 95% of the time, you can see ahead when someone is going to be stupid.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not if they are coming from behind or from my side.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If someone is going to hit me behind. I will let them. Obviously I don't think anyone wants it to happen. It does happen though.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never be scared of driving, just be aware and confident in driving and you will be fine.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"Just don't be scared" is not exactly the best advice... I can't just like, stop.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2nd gen trucker, I do my best to break certain stereotypes around truckers. I do everything i can not to tailgate, help me help you

9 years ago | Likes 399 Dislikes 3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only experience with a large truck was when I moved cross state and drove my stuff. Its like a different road in truck lane, so civil. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had a good trucker exp recently. I flashed him to pull out in front. Waited till he over took. he let me by while giving a wave before 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He over took the next truck. I like good truckers. I don't see many bad ones tbh.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can you tell other truckers on the radio if a small car is behind you to not ride them too?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I give truckers extra time with my blinker. Not sure if it helps any but I like to think it gives them more time to react if something hapns

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unrelated, but I like to make a point of paying for a proper shower instead of washing my balls in the public washroom sink

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If you just get a rewards card from major truck stops, 50+ gallon fuel purchases get you a free shower.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I like the Pilot/Flying J showers, but I'm supposed to fuel at the Husky, so I wind up going out of my way and paying. But Husky's are gross

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Try the showers at a love's station, the ones up on the I15 are real nice and clean

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll keep that if I ever go into the US. I only do Ontario-Alberta so my options are Husky, Flying J, and Petro Canada, which is even worse

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not see anything for a good 10 seconds and couldn't break fast as I might have skidded into the ditch. Thanks for being a good driver.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't trust semi truck drivers at all. Some are ok, but sometimes you get the Meth'd out guy going 20 over.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blizzard here a few months ago, everyone doing 35 & under, trucker passes me doing at least 50 and blows so much snow around me I could 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, in my experience truckers are usually better and more courteous drivers than plenty of commuters. That CDL means something.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

at rushhour I always try to roll at a constant speed so the rigs don't have to start and stop. Saves your gas, clutch, and keeps cars moving

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I may not always respect your safety buffer, but when I do, I get out of it ASAP

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I change into a lane in front of a trucker, I make sure to give them plenty of space so they don't have to slow down make space.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for being one of those who dont failgate. Mad respect for all long haulers out there

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ditto from a fellow driver

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. The safety zone depends on the vehicle you are IN FRONT OF, not the one you are in. I see people cutting semis off every day, morons.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IMO people in general are bad drivers; bad truck drivers are just more memorable than bad car drivers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you feel about people trying to get on the freeway who can't accelerate fast enough to get ahead of you but also are blocked from 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/3 dropping behind you by the tail of idiots that won't just pass you?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm going to make a "don't cut off truck drivers, they're bigger than you and you will lose badly" edit when I can get to a computer

9 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 5

Here's three things. Empty trailers can bounce. Air brakes take more time to engage. And Loads can shift in hard brakes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Physics ALWAYS wins.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I just want this as a bumper sticker

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

maybe the size of a poster on the back of big trucks so people can see it

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They shouldn't need them!!!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My biggest gripe about truckers, why pass anpother truck on hilly roads when you are going 1 mph faster. then you slow down bc going up (1)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because truck1 might not be fully loaded, but truck2 is. 6 tons takes a while to stop.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2) a hill when you can clearly see behind you that there are a line of cars doing 5-10 mph faster than you two.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In my company it's forbidden to pass other trucks on the motorway. I think mostly it's done because of boredom.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The second gif has nothing to do with following distance

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 14

Well when the car collided with the first semi and came to a stop, the distance was well over one car length between the van and the second

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Semi. It show how quickly you close large distances at highway speeds and shows that 1 car length clearly wouldn't give you enough time to

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

React.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But it has everything to do with making risky maneuvers when you don't have time or space to safely react.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's on the car not the semi. Car did an illegal lane change.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Does bring into focus how quickly something can happen.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

And the first picture was about a reckless truck driver.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I agree, but it shows distance covered and reaction time, there was nothing that truck could do to avoid hitting the now dead idiot

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

I understand that the person shouldn't change lanes, but non-moving traffic is illegal on a highway and can get someone killed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually, that gif was circulating Reddit a while back, she lived. In a coma or some shit, but she lived

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

How tf? Jesus, I wouldn't wanna live after something like that...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was meant as an example of how quick something can happen at highway speeds, car was already wrecked before he knew what was happening

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

actually they lived with minor injuries believe it or not

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What?! Source please

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aggressive driving, just making a point haha

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

You didn't include any weighted vehicle math.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

I shouldn't have to, this is referring to the average driver, most of which drive a car.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

They aren't the only ones on the road dipshit. You might not know this but you drive with different vehicles on the road at the same time.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

Hey, hey, hey, what if maybe you took this as a generalized information post. Or better yet, do your own math and make your own post. Yeah?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Your .17s also assumes that the car in front of you goes from 60-0 in an instant, which you also disproved by saying about how long it took

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

It's a generalized scenario providing a simple to understand qualification of why giving room is important

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

To stop from that speed, however you are 100% correct in that people NEED TO LEAVE SOME FUCKING ROOM.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I think the hatchback's driver dozed off behind the wheel.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Doubt it. They decided to take the exit at the last second and performed illegal multi lane change.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Good observation. I didn't see that the side road was an exit.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Poor road design really, off ramp should have quick traffic flow to avoid back ups like that onto the roadway.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's a common problem in many parts of Europe.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Think of how dumb the average imgurian is, and realize half of them are spambots.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

nono, sub-average! even worse than the regular imgurian

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The more you tailgate me the further I drop back behind the car in front of me. So, if they brake I have time for both of us to stop safely

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

that's what i learned in truck-school.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's fine unless you are in far left "passing" lane. Otherwise you will get a ticket.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same. Especially so for semi trucks who tailgate me.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

While having distance and driving defensively are great, distance is often out of your control in/around big cities

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

I have never had this problem even when I lived in Houston. Drive slower and you'll create space in front and people won't stay behind you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Right. They'll tear around you in a huff, and cut in front of you to try and save 11 seconds on their commute - causing a bigger hazard.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but you can at least try to follow the 2 second rule, and it's not that hard in 30mph / stop go traffic.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Or on any busy road, tbh. Because people are dicks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You also aren't drying 65 in the city i'd hope.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whatever the flow of traffic is moving, sometimes it's around the speed limit, usually lower

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why you shouldn't be doing 60mph in a city area.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whatever safe flow of traffic

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True, but speed is not. It's usually the people driving over the speed limit that cause wrecks

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Following too close is the number one cause of accidents. Speeding is the number one cause of fatalities.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have to disagree. It's usually the people not paying attention, regardless of their speed.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

And today, people will actually get MAD at you if you leave more than a carlength in front. Then they drive crazily to get in front of you.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The reason why you pay so much for auto insurance is because people like that end up learning the hard way.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Oh look, a space!"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And that's when I shot him, your honor.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Driving is the most dangerous thing most of us do all day.

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

One day all cars will have autopilot, and no one will have to risk their lives trying to get from one place to another.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been wanting this on a bumper sticker. In terms of accidental death, only heroin kills more people.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I started bike commuting an hour each way because I could not take it anymore.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You wear a helmet, right?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, helmet, lights, protected bike lane for all but first and last mile.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depending on where you live, biking is probably even less safe. :/

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

unfortunately.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone from the UK, exactly this

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Know someone who's stuck in coma because riding bike in South Florida. Sorta expected to hear it happen.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sorry to read that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Both motor and pedal cycles :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been thinking about doing this. Where do you keep your bike while you work? What if it rains?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If it rains i drive.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In my office. I take it up the freight elevator.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Like really. What do you have to lose by giving cars space? I know we all do it sometimes but at least try to drive safe

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Wow, it's amazing to see someone in the comments accept that they aren't perfect all the time.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in caliornia the traffics always bumper to bumper so you dont have to worry about hitting shit at all.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That GIF was in Belgium... Horrifying, but somehow the driver managed to survive that shit.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

The kid toys that went flying.... I was praying there wasn't a kid in there. Not their fault their parent is a dumbass.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thank you for saying that. I was honestly kind of depressed thinking that I just watched someone die ;_; I hope they drive safer now...

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

How the hell did he survive that?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Roughly translated, she crushed her hand, broke her neck and went in a coma. She woke up and is not paralysed, but has heavy revalidation...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn lucky she is not paralyzed. People die from driving into light poles and she survives this..

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Amazing auto engineering?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

More like witchcraft

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mind you, the article is from 2014.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Google translate is our "friend", thank you for the line

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i dont think overdreven (exagerated amount of luck) is the proper word to use here...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also this is why you don't cut two lanes like that. Regardless of how late you might be.

9 years ago | Likes 2018 Dislikes 3

Glad somebody else noted the blind double lane-change.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not even a two lane problem. At that distance from the truck he has ZERO visibility of the right lane. Only a complete moron would go right.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

And if there's trucks on your lane, trust me there's more on the right.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll admit it, I did this once, and luckily all I got was a huge dent in the hood. But when I did it I had to merge from the ramp onto 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the highway and then get to the left lane as the highway forked into two different directions.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Always better late than dead!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

r/peopleACTUALLYfuckingdying

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1 You can always turn around further ahead. With GPS as well, getting lost isn't as big a concern. Though the rule I follow is when the

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

2 GPS tells me I'm within 5 miles of my turnoff point I try to get in the lane for it, I should be in it within 1 mile.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It also depends on the road, the speed traffic is going, if you know which side of the road the exit is on. (fuck you, left exits, fuck you)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fucking Louisville is FULL of them. Drove through it so many times, it's such a shit show with those left exits...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you leave for your destination late, then don't try to rush, you're obviously late. Better late than dead.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see this shit all the time and it makes me madder than hell.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just think of how infinitely more late you will be if shit like this happens....

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree! If your about to miss exit don't rush into it! Take the next exit.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Im always late - my ex

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

fucking being late. the difference in times from a reckless driver and a very good driver is less than five minutes for city driving.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why I still use my Garmin with well known commutes. Being told how far my exit is gives me the proper heads up to start moving over

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looks a bit like bags full of stuff for young kids flying out after the car gets hit a second time. Maybe not, but what a moron.

Are you kidding? You think that car would have been able to stop if they had seen the truck a couple of lengths earlier?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 10

No, he just wouldn't have gone in the lane if he could see the truck there, moron. Hence, "one of which completely blindly".

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

To make it worse, that highway exit is a well known traffic jam spot during rush hour. I passed there every week when I lived in Belgium.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

A few years ago someone near me cut 5 lanes to get to an exit she didn't want to miss, rolled a van with four kids in it. I don't

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

remember how many died, but it wasn't good. Best part is that the next exit only adds a 2 minute delay. Takes that long to drive between

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the two exits through the town.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually this is an unrelated gif as you can tell by the car color. That woman in the gif survived with a broken elbow I think. Ridiculous.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

lol I got downvoted. Here's your sauce, 'tards- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKNQG6pSYig

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There were toys in the vehicle. Anyone know if there were children in there? Please let the answer be no.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No just the mom and she made it out with pretty severe but non life threatening injuries. The white Ford that is. That red car idk.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank yooou

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try telling that to Californians. Those dipshits can't drive for shit.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

You should take a dip into Kansas and feel your jaw drop. Kcmo drivers are assholes, but KcK drivers will get you killed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

KcK KcMo imjurian here, can confirm drivers are shit. Not a day goes by i dont see 3 plus cars speed weaving through a 2 lane road.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You spelled New Yorkers wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You spelled everyone wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Come to Florida, I see at least one person pulled over by cops and/or a crash every week.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lives in Port shithole FL: can confirm

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Moved to Michigan, from California's Bay Area, and I still feel the same about driver's. Percentage of idiot drivers hasn't diminished.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Was a delivery guy in Metro Detroit for 4 years, can confirm.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Am from Bay Area, can attest that my Bay Area brethren are a bunch of fucks

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or if you migbt miss an exit, just turn around at the next one

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because now you'll be even later, or worse yet, dead.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No they dead

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or worse, expelled!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think everyone in that car is now late.

9 years ago | Likes 484 Dislikes 2

Depends who you ask, some may argue they got to their destination exactly when they were supposed to.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OHHHH DOUBLE PUNNN

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

This was in Belgium. Everyone knows this exit is always backed out. Always. It was a young mom. She survived with no mayor issues.

Good thing too, next stop the white house.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Good to hear the mayors stance in the issue

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Scratched car.... major issue

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Glad to hear city politics are not in play.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was the kid in the car?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Holy shit, I thought that car had been pulverized, never imagined ANYBODY surviving that, especially after that second hit.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn she was lucky! She's probably not gonna do that kind of lane switch ever again.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And they're fixing it currently!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's really surprising, I would have thought they died. They got hit pretty damn hard

9 years ago | Likes 155 Dislikes 1

She was very lucky not to have been directly hit in either of the crashes.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If you study it long enough, you'll find that the blunt of the second impact is focused on the rear hatch. By a miracle, she survived.

9 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

And by some miracle, she'll pull another stunt like this next time she's behind the wheel. Stay tuned for next week's crash.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I would need a source for this, seems impossible. If true, great safety commercial for said car manufacturer.

thanks

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Basically it says she was extremely lucky and has a long recovery ahead

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thanks for delivering!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Your math would be a bit off, because you assume that he car in front of you goes fro 60 to 0 instantly, however you are right, room, people

9 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 6

I was going to point this out as well but the sentiment is what's important. People need to remain a safe distance behind.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's not instant but it's pretty fast.My car will sense if I'm jabbing the brakes fast and fully engage ABS before the pedal is 1/2 way down

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Didn't go into a full analysis as I'm already in the middle of finals week, just wanted to provide a bit of a 'give room' foundation

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 9

Yah, and that second example is a bit off, because the second lane being at near stop is rare and changes the situation substantially.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Of course, I'm merely saying that there is reaction time, but that doesn't excuse tailgating at any speed, much less high speeds

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That car in the second gif hit 0 pretty quickly.............

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

We are basically told "speed you drive per h/10000". So at 50km/h at least 5m distance, at 120km/h 12m.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(semi driver here) i was taught, on clear dry roads, you need 9 seconds to react AND stop properly

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Leave some fucking room.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yes and no. Reaction time covers that problem. Even if both cars slow down at the same rate, you need 88 ft before second car starts to stop

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Here we say that you need a 2 seconds space to be safe (which is quite a lot on the high way). It's a good way to take reaction time & speed

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yep, but I was merely saying that while you need 88 feet to start to stop, the car in front of you can't go from 60-0 instantly, so you're

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Both going to be traveling forwards, albeit the car in front of you slowing down, so in reality, it's going to be about 150 feet in front of

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Of the car in front of you that becomes the stop location, not in place

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ops estimation of the average human reaction speed is 4 times higher than what it actually is.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

what it actually is in a lab test, people on the road are distracted by the stereo and/or tired, so better give yourself a bit of extra time

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Not in a lab test. I'm not saying they shouldn't leave room but it is what it is. Scaremongering doesn't help people improve.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

god i hate it when cars cut me off because im giving my self room to stop.

9 years ago | Likes 4434 Dislikes 21

Anyone who thinks you can observe a three second rule has never actually been on a highway, nuff said.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

All. The. Fucking. Time.

9 years ago | Likes 137 Dislikes 0

All. The. Time. = ATL = Atlanta, GA... where motorists of a 5.5 million population sized city get Drivers Licenses at Wal-Mart.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So, that's the culprit issuing them their licenses... I always wondered how these degenerates are on the road.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get this all the time "That's not merge room, that's my safe driving distance you asshole" - me muttering to myself

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

This. This is why nobody gives adequate follow distance, because other drivers just think you are making a space for them.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I get that driving a fire truck. People think 17 tonnes stops just as quick as a 2T car.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Happens to me all day long.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

true fact. I thought driving on the beltway in DC was hazardous...until I moved to Texas.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, and yes. I don't get it. Because the secs. they are saving by going in front of me will do so much for their date. Fucking hate them.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

we're at a point now where people need to be horrified by show them the consequences of doing this show them car crushed into cubes with 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

2/2 people inside because they got hit in rear and ended up squashed under a truck in front. I've witnessed it happen, never forget that day

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh my fucking god. Took a vacation to New York City and drove there. SO MANY FUCKING PEOPLE DO THIS, JESUS CHRIST!!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or when they cut me off while I'm turning because I'm respecting the painted lines (not highway. A town intersection)

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I don't do that unless I am really in a hurry. Sorry.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is no such thing as safe following distance. It's like those rare particles, there just long enough to observe...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yep. May as well put it in reverse.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

man, where i live if they dont trade paint they didnt cut you off. damn dense around here

its good to be safe. people are dicks on the highway. just gotta keep on truckin man.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

People are dicks full stop. I just expect dick moves while driving. Safer that way.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Truth. Do what I do and speed up just enough to not let them cut in

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why it's a good thing that my State doesn't allow for open carry. I would have to reload while driving to work.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll lay on my horn until they either get back in their lane, or get out of my buffer.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is impossible to have a safe space between you and the car in front of you in DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland. You ALWAYS get cut off

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or worse, cut you off and speed towards a red light. Expert level douchebaggery.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Were you considered to be at fault?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The insurance companies settled for me to be at 80% fault. The policewoman never even saw my truck or the scene. Many wrong things...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct me if I am wrong but if they do this and cause an accident and you can prove it, it is their fault.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in most cases yes. but the cops will always write you a ticket.

I'm that asshole who drives slow in major cities. Except around DC and Miami. Gotta drive like speed racer there.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

DC is the first big city I've lived in. Driving here is awful.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Drive the speed limit in Vegas. Just got honked at and then told to fuck off for it on the way home today. The hate sustains me

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My wife started try to make me drive less "aggressive" now and THAT shit happens to me all the fuckin' time now. HATE IT.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is why i follow trucks. Theyre slower but nobody will cut in front of u to b behind it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is why we have a rule that says you always need to be as far to the right as possible on highways

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the ford focus crash happened in belgium. here's the source (and why it's a bad example)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TL;DR: the driver skipped a lane in front of a truck without visibility, rammed a stationnary truck due to a traffic jam down the exit ramp.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

chances to avoid the crash with the 4-6-7 second rule? NONE.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why you think that possible extra second will matter ? Letting cars slide in, will help traffic flow & get you there faster.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

I want to upvote this more than once goddammit

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Consider how much time you actually lose over the course of your trip or commute if you just let them, vs aggressively blocking.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

my exact thought.. it's so damn frustrating.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And tailgate me and I must leave MORE room in front for you to stop as well.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I love tailgaters, they're always really angry people. Just tap your brakes / slow right down & then blast your horn when they blast theirs.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With a manual transmission just shift down. Your car will slow down while your brake lights stay off. An excellent way to scare tailgaters.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I prefer them to know I'm deliberately being a dick, but each to their own.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Personally I like to find slower traffic like an 18wheeler and match their speed. But local laws say you HAVE to give way to faster traffic

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just use your wiper fluid.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to have a car that this worked with! It'd hit every car behind me and never land on my windscreen

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The closer you get, the slower I'll go!! Fine if you don't respect your own life but at-least respect that of others who wants to live.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've gotten so tired of this that I now speed up to block them. Its like standing in line, don't cut in front of me because there is space.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

That's not great behaviour. Sometimes people need to change lanes. If no one gives them space, they'll cause traffic by stopping to merge.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Exactly. It's almost impossible maintain safe distances on a busy highway/interstate. Any room you leave will just be filled up by others.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's much less annoying if you watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtwY9xKfaYo . You're actually preventing traffic jams behind you.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just gotta change your mindset a bit that when that those merges happen you're being a silent highway hero :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow. Thanks for posting that link. Interesting.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should drive in Beirut, if you leave any space at all some idiot is gonna cut you off for sure.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I worked out a good solution. Travel behind trucks or busses. Assholes don't cut in behind those vehicles even if they're not slow.

9 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Youve never lived in texas then. No such thing as too small a space for these dumbasses to try to squeeze into.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Military vehicles, if they're doing the speed limit, but if not, oh well. Also NEVER get in the middle of a group of them, that's mean.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I avoid being behind trucks if at all possible. I've had one of them kick up a rock and smash my windshield before.

Nice to use one as a pacecar and just chill during longer trips. Just make sure your in sight and there's merge room for anyone getting on

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love following trucks for that reason. Also takes longer for them to stop because of the inertia, so you have a bit more reaction time.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Yay a fellow truck follower :D

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't forget reduced air resistance behind them even at safe distances which is better fuel economy.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

For real. I go from 7l/100km to 4.2 while following a truck at 100km/hr

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Except you have 0 vision in front of them add you depend on them to react. Plus, if you hit the back end of one. It's not a fun time.. (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well the idea is that you can leave enough space behind the truck to give yourself time to react. Unless they hit a wall or something.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You'd be surprised how fast a truck with modern braking system can stop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ridS396W2BY

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a buddy who hit the backend of one... http://imgur.com/24UCn9a How he survived, i have no fucking clue.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just make sure you don't tailgate them either, they literally can't see you if you drive up their ass.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

They literally can't see you if you are anywhere directly behind them.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

The mirrors are out to the side far enough so they can see you if you're back far enough, still not a great visibility.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I still don't see how this is allowed. It's mandatory for all vehicles yet we let the most dangerous get away with doing whatever they want.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

No matter what law is in place, it's physically impossible to see through a massive fucking semi-trailer. Passenger vehicles get away with

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

[1/4] How what's allowed? If you're driving within 150 ft or so of the back end of a semi with a 53 ft trailer, they start to lose sight of

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to get really mad at that shit. But then i realised getting angry at idiots is like getting angry at the weather. Compensate for both

9 years ago | Likes 778 Dislikes 3

My grandfather put it this way in driving lessons: Everyone has a Stupidity Bubble. They need room to make mistakes AND for you to react.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plus, I take sweet satisfaction in my accident-free driving history.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well spoken sir.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just put on some chill music. Don't give a fuck anymore. I can stay in traffic and just sing my anger away. No one is listening to me.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Yea man its all you can do. Let the idiots be idiots

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I agree with you. At the same time, I'd rather just keep those drivers in front of me anyways.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Same here...Every morning. I just roll with it. I just let them jump in front of me...Idiots will be Idiots.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well.... If there is an accident, you're gonna drive into it, rather than leave it behind.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Nope. Because im not likely to be tailgating and will have enough time to stop.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes, but it will still be in front of you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dad, is that you?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I hope you find him someday, mate!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just learned something.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Drive defensively ppl...defensively.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

And you know the best defense is a good offense!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Are you THAT guy? Lol!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its when im towing a 30 foot trailer that weighs a shit ton. i cant just stop on a dime.

9 years ago | Likes 121 Dislikes 0

I feel the same way at UPS in the PKG cars. Those mofos are heavy for their size. Getting cut off has ruined my day numerous times. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The worst is getting cut off and having to hit the breaks harder than planned and dropping ALL the nicely organized pkgs of the shelves.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It irritates me when I get that and I'm pretty sure my small-ass car only weighs 80lbs.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just get better brakes. I hear hitting a car adds to your stopping power.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Is a car carcass the opposite of flame decals?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yea people are fucking idiots. They forget. Or plain dont understand the forces at work when driving.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

More the second. People aren't taught physics in a meaningful sense in k-12. Things like momentum would be good for everyone to know.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

(In the US anyways, maybe other countries do better with practical physics education)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

or....they just don't give a shit...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Those people i want to grab by the collar and take them to an accident.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get a dash cam, so you can prove you were following the road rules in the event you rear end some dickwad who cut you off.

9 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

i have a dash cam in my car my 16 year olds car. ill need to upgrade the cam in the truck. 40 bucks is cheap

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In most cases it doesn't matter you rear-ended them, here in Ontario it's like that

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

You missed the part where a dash cam was mentioned.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

This. They seem to think that distance is me letting them in. No dipshit. It's for me to safely slow down in case of emergencies

9 years ago | Likes 197 Dislikes 6

Amen! They're all idiots!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The emergency is that they just HAVE to be in your lane, RIGHT NOW!!!! Assholes

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

so you back off, then someone else pulls in, and again. feels like you're moving backwards

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where I live, most shit stains speed up & close their buffer if you use your turn signal. I use mine but empathize with those who don't.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Sucks dude. Here, most people are reasonable and generally helpful if you're trying to change lanes, and not a douche

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I LOVE Iowa drivers for this exact reason. The part I go to sometimes, you cross the border and BAM! Mostly good drivers!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

do you live in tampa

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

In or around Chicago, IL....I vacation in Florida a lot though - y'all are just as crazy down there.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always try to use my turn signal unless there isn't really anyone on the rod but myself. Thing is sometimes even with turn signals (1)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

People don't let you in. Smh I've had that happen to me several times. I live in CA Bay Area. (2/2)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I find I prefer east bay driving (880/580)—people are more aggressive, but more predictable than the jackballs on the peninsula (101/280).

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

THIS! This is the real problem. You can't leave 2-3 car lengths, because someone just fills it, and now you have to drop back even more.

On the southern east coast the left lane is for driving like our God and savior, Dale Earnhardt.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I follow at a 2-3 distance & someone behind me starts to flash the brights b/c he/she think I'm slow. No, I am being safe in traffic

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can't you just pass them on the left lane?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not where I live, at least. People seem to confuse the purpose of that lane. It's either the "fast lane," which isn't right because they (1/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still don't get out of the way if the person behind you is going faster, or they get it right and consider it the "passing lane," but (2/3)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They decide that they're just going to pass everyone even when the other lane is open

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only if you do the exact same thing to them and then slow down to get your space again, and he just does the exact same thing back to you.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean you could just constantly be passing flying down the left side on an interstate. Technically you wouldn't need to go in front of anyo

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well on the plus side, long trips wouldn't be boring anymore.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Road rage always adds excitement.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Story time. My uncle was once pulled over for tailgating even though he liked to follow the 10mph=10 feet between cars rule bc others (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Kept cutting and he had to slow down, car cuts, rinse repeat. He told the officer "if I kept leaving space, I'd be back where I started."

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Did he get a ticket or did the cop buy that explanation?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly, you'd be going backwards.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You would hate Montreal

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I was literally thinking that since this happens on my commute every day in MTL.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try to drive safe there, schoolbus passes you doing 180kph, with every one of the little fuckers in the windows flipping you off.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

All smoking and eating smoked meat sandwiches too. Bastards.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From Ottawa, I try to drive in Montreal as little as possible. You have to drive like you're in a Mad Max movie or you won't get anywhere.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I spent two months driving truck from Belleville to Montreal/Quebec corridor. You think driving four wheels is stressful there, try eighteen

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That would be 4.5 times more stressful. ????

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would be 4.5 times more stressful. ????

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did the calculation once, I think the exact number was 4.5239 or something

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People are idiots. No truck can brake on a dime especially if its carrying heavy loads, or liquid. Stay clear of trucks.

9 years ago | Likes 829 Dislikes 14

your comment needed only the first three words. The rest is redundant.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Actually no, my comment, which I commented earlier, that comment is not redundant. I did not repeat myself in my previous comment.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Redundant" might not be the right synonym. My english betraied me. I just meant "People are idiots" was enough to explain the situation

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It take well over 300 yards to stop a semi on the highway. A guy stopped in the middle lane WAY in front of me once. I almost lost the (1)

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Plywood I was carrying. Luckily the idiot realized what was about to happen just in time to floor it.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

And please be courteous to us truckers. Dives me insane when I have my turn signal on and people don't let me in.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I guess I'm one of those nice people that take the time to slow down to let you truckers move over =P

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And I appreciate that. A lot of people are courteous and I always try to thank then when they are.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Once when I was driving home at night there was a huge semi behind me it was pretty far back but some asshole coming in from the on ramp 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

cut off the guy 2 cars in front of me. I managed to stop in time, screeching halt but that truck was not gonna stop in time. The poor 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

guy was even trying to get on the shoulder to avoid hitting me but it was not gonna happen. Managed to get past the fuckstick in front 3/?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

of me but still barely missed getting hit. Could even hear his tires screaming. Don't be a shitty driver kids. You could hurt someone 4/4

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just ignore physics. Most drivers seem to, anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the case above it was the truck driver tailgating.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Freaks me the fuck out when I get stuck between trucks and the asshats in front make it to where I'm about to recreate the matrix scene.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why I slow way the fuck down when trucks tailgate me.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If that truck was tailgating the car then the truck driver is the idiot who should have been clear of the car

9 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

Hope he doesn't sleep at night anymore because he killed people.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

He will be in prison. Truck drivers are automatically responsible for accidents unless proof is available showing it was unavoidable.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The only time I've ever been scared driving was when a semi was tailgating me at under 10 feet going 75mph. Drove 90mph to escape.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad was hit by a semi that run a red light. The truck slid 102 feet before the light and 137 feet after the light.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Snap change traffic lights!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It wasnt snap change. He was going way too fast. His logs showed he had made an 8 hour drive in about 5 hours.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The officers had gotten calls about him all the way up to that point, and it nearly killed my dad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh yeah that's speeding, very fast. there's a highway here that has snap change lights that have people, cars+trucks, sliding through.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also stay aware of trucks. Give them room to change lanes, be aware they change lanes for cars on the shoulder, etc.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I'm on the highway and there's a truck I try to stay away from it if I can. The mass, the traveling speed and other dumb drivers scare me

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was cut off by a guy a while back. I drive a 1976 E250. With only 2 car lengths. I am at fault. Fuck everything.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Dashcam dude.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was some time ago, but nothing I can do about it now

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dash cam?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My state has an auto-fault if you hit the back of someone's car. I may have to invest in a dashcam because there are people who try to --

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

-- abuse that to get insurance off of you.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think that is actually exactly what happened to me. Illinois here and same law. Absolute BS, really.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I drive an MX5 and the number of SUVs that think they can tailgate me is insane

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

As someone who doesn't speak in English as main language, but is a driver (22Yo almost), what does tailgating means?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tailgating is when the person following you is less than 1 car length from your rear bumper, this means they will have a bad time if you 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's not really a clear definition like that. It's just driving closely behind another car.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got it, thanks... Bad wording on my side, I meant an explanation :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gluing yourself to someone elses back bumper. Often done with the intent of being a massive douchebag.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, okay, that... Yeah, one of the first things you should be taught when you start driving

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 have to stop suddenly

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got it, thanks <3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Volvo are working on tech that can stop a truck from 50MPH in sub 10 feet. Will find video.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I saw it, it was truly impressive. It's a sort of Formula One experience for truck drivers

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To blow you mind even more. The trailer had 40 tonnes of weight in it

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It would bounce on its tires if it was empty.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats 50 Kmh

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

https://youtu.be/ridS396W2BY - seriously good tech. Could save so many lives

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

If only trucking companies would fork out the $150k for their tractors, or independents could afford them...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are still working on the tech but this will help a lot.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah dude. Looks promising. Its a shame it needs to be created but sadly its the world we live in

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lesson from this video: don't tailgate trucks, they may brake harder than you

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So if you have to be infront of a truck on the highway you better make sure it's a Volvo.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A new one. With this tech. Turned on.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In Sweden of Germany, because it'll take 20 years to get that shit approved in the US.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not Germany. It's full of modern lorries being driven by former Soviets with no regard for safety or human life. None.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

how.... like, did they turn physics off for a bit or something?....it looks like they only use front brakes, i thought maybe they have 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

2/2 brakes on all wheels or something to increase friction?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They have brakes on all wheels. Looks like front brake because the cab has it's own suspension, so it tips forward independently of the rest

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ahh coolio thanks

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hamsters start running the other way.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

dem must be some big hamsters

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was working with CDL drivers who thought that the heavier the load, the shorter the stopping distance. I thought they were joking...

9 years ago | Likes 157 Dislikes 0

Someone didn't graduate lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe you forgot to specify that the wheels aren't locked?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is some truth to it, but as with all things, the real answer starts with "it depends".

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 6

Yeah, like it depends on whether you're driving a 1968 Mack or a 2015 Volvo tractor with ABS and oversize brakes.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Unloaded, a semi is extremely unbalanced and 8 out of its 10 wheels have basically no traction.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I currently drive truck. My experience is there's a sweet spot in between max loaded and empty for braking performance.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

IN THEORY, lighter will always be better, but it requires a level of brake control that is godlike. Some more weight makes that much easier.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Can't a computer do that brake control for you?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The day human ignorance will stop surprising you will be the day after you die. Source - Life

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Inertia. Doesn't. Work! Like! That! ... Dumbfucks!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Empty trailers tend to bounce when stopping hard

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It works like this -

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's actually true to an extent. An empty trailer has a higher chance of skidding and jackknifing than a loaded trailer.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 7

I was about to say this. The brakes work better under load, or at least that's what I recall from drum breaks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The trailer still won't pass the tractor.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The ass end most certainly will pass the tractor but it rarely disconnects like in GTA. the kingpin is stronger than most people think

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is true, the heavier the load, the shorter the stopping distance. The tires are at 100 psi or more to support max weight, 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

The smaller the contact patch on the ground, which means skidding. Sliding friction is less than rolling = less breaking power.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Smaller contact patch at less than max weight

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Which is why you see so many truck skid marks in places where traffic jams are frequent or before a traffic light, underloaded trucks.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Source, experienced truck driver and engineering major.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

This sounds like an opportunity for improvement. Independent ABS on the trailer could maximize friction forces. But adds cost to the trailer

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We did tests using a loaded trailer and an empty one when I was in CDL school because nobody believed it either

9 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 0

I don't understand why they wouldn't believe it. It's pretty logical. Hopefully they passed the knowledge to non believers.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They think because more weight on the wheels, it should stop faster. But that's not how inertia works.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The empty trailers have a nasty habit of bouncing on their tires in a hard braking event. Pushes the entire truck.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bigger = heavier = slower. Number of people think a truck is inherently slow... on a highway, just because you can go faster.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I-n-e-r-t-i-a, it's why your loaded rig is the juggernaut, bitch!

9 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

also why you should give bikes more room in front of you cause they can stop A LOT quicker

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

i give em 200 feet of space. no one has gone in front of me yet when they see the bike, except other bikes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tell that to the idiot who switched into my lane years back a couple feet in front of me. I couldn't see his stupid fucking tire.
