Your clothes will come out cleaner and the machine will last longer with just enough detergent to cover the bottom of the cap, especially with high efficiency detergents. The excess ends up in the plumbing, leads to mold growth, slime, and smells. I also put in load of bath towels soaked with plain white vinegar once a month to flush the machine.
