tapa means "cover" or "lid" in Spanish. It all evolved tho, and nowadays a tapa is a small piece of food, almost of any kind.

Same thing is happening in Europe, too. Mostly in western/southern countries, like Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece... this is a global issue.
