Sadly no one in the US gets a "normal wage". Tips allow them to make more than minimum wage at a starting position.
More about being able to handle a decent amount of tables than looks. Higher volume of tables = higher volume of tips.

As an engineer I say Celsius but as someone from the USA I use Fahrenheit. The struggle is real.
