But if your stuff is in your apartment and not in common areas, what does it matter? Not in US, there’s usually a small storage unit in the cellar that comes with each apartment (and a separate bike storage area).

I’m actually not sure if there are Firefighter and Paramedic days. The Fire Department does open its doors on the city’s foundation day and the EMTs are there too. As far as I know first responders are under the fire department and we have no private ambulance services.
Outreaches like this go a long way towards getting the message out that the police are a part of the community, they are civilian authorities after all. It also helps that they’re mostly authoritative without being asswipes. I wouldn’t hesitate about approaching a cop here, and I’m a foreigner. My good experiences with cops (from personal interactions and also from what I’ve seen and heard) still outnumber the bad reports. I find it really sad that this isn’t the status quo.
I’ll see how she reacts and report back.
