I’m ashtray in the arm of your airplane seat old. Yes, even in the era of car and restaurant smoking sections, it was gross. Even as the child of a smoker, and therefore always in the restaurant smoking sections, it was weird.

A lot of things aren’t supposed to work this way. Too many loopholes and exceptions built in, and the primary mechanism to enforce is through the court system (glacially slow and potentially compromised).
