In my own experience it had a lot to do with the type of wood we were splitting. I'm not gonna say that these were not useful

I do believe splitting wood builds character. Especially when it's cold as balls outside and you can only enter if you can hear the house
These are still nice for massive stumps that are either green or frozen or both. Source: how I paid for gas for 6 years
True. You still have to wrestle these stumps up there constantly and remove the split pieces. I prefer my 20lb maul
Believe it or not our splitter was more of a pain in the back that anything. The splitting maul was faster and took less effort
False. My grandmother got two fingers cut off by a splitter and the leather gloves allowed for them to put them back later
They are really nice for green stumps that are nearly impossible for a human to split
