I doubt that the populace could take on the US military.

Not against simplification, but 14.5% is too high or too low depending on the person.
There is nowhere in the US where gun control is strict enough to make a difference and because the laws are not uniform they are useless
The US' gun control isn't strict enough anywhere to actually make a difference and since the laws are not uniform they do nothing.
