It is frustrating when people refer to ‘The Government’ in a way that implies its separation from us, the people. In this country we ARE the government. We are self-governing. And it is only in this sense that I both agree and disagree with OP. Yes, the government owes us these things, but only because we owe them to ourselves.
The us constitution was explicitly ordained and established by the people. All authority the government possesses derives ultimately from this constitution, which derives its authority from this consent, this agreement, of the people. Federal officers routinely swear oaths to this constitution. Soldiers swear oaths to defend it. Lincoln would refer to our country as one “of the people, by the people, for the people.” 1/2

It portrays them as having no agency in this marketplace of ideas we all engage with. And replaces this very real chunk of humanity with an imagined evil. While it may seem to explain why so many people disagree with you, I posit that it may be possible that some large groups of people share similar values which inform their political opinions
