Plus snakes weren't really thought of as pets at that time.
Women would be shunned for smoking cigarettes or chewing gum, partying was for men and it was very unusual to ride in a car with a man.
It was very unusual for a lady to do those things at the time. At that time periodWoman were expected to cook and make babies and that's it.
What there constitutes either? Sure, she broke the social norms and was very unladely like but why would she go to jail?
