that sounds absolutely plausible - many vintage/3rd world metals like solders (used to join) had 'better flow' with toxic metals.

yeah sounds like a defect we call a 'dry join', it's common for sintering instead of solder.

18ct is similar to platinum, neither have nickel or cobalt so the only thing is union through thermal equilibrium. it's a strong ring.

The best way to tell the difference is by looking at the certificate where it says 'lab diamond' haha

There are a few tells under magnification, but it's pretty unlikely they would be obvious.
I'm a pompous expert and can confirm its a hard call to tell the difference :x

In reality that applies to most things: cars, scrap metal, a newly installed kitchen - it's about knowing what one's are an investment.
