There's actually been a trend of small bands selling their music on cassettes. They're cheap to make and people like them as objects (mostly for nostalgia reasons)

Using the name "Palantir" indicates either complete obliviousness or being evil on purpose. He named his mass surveillance company after a demonic crystal ball that an evil wizard used to spy on people

I suffered from anxiety and insomnia as a kid, was eating a microwave pizza every night for dinner, and had to watch my parents be passive aggressive at each other all day. I'm much happier as an adult with access to alcohol

The two things are related. ERs are obligated to treat people who's lives are at risk; most of those people end up in eternal medical debt they can't pay; ERs have to charge people who CAN pay exponentially more to make up for it. Also, insurance companies demand they get a "discount" which leads to the base cost being jacked up arbitrarily to make the "discounted" cost the same as the original base cost. Getting rid of health insurance and implementing universal healthcare solves both.

Math is a human invention that doesn't map perfectly onto reality anyway, that's why when you use the numbers we invented to measure a circle you have to use a hideous mess of a number that we can only ever approximate, pi, to get the answer. If math were a "real" part of the universe rather than a man made tool, pi wouldn't be an irrational number. Do I know what I'm talking about? No, but this is my opinion based on vibes

I can't believe I listened to this idiot years ago. Luckily I was also checking out some Marxist youtube videos and podcasts at that same time so when they were telling me "the biggest problem is the economic system" and Rogan started telling me "the biggest problem is trans people" it didn't take much effort to figure out which of those two propositions made more sense

I feel like Guatemala, Chile, Bolivia were probably not too happy about the US overthrowing their governments and installing dictators prior to Trump

I call it "generic hot woman face" and it's what happens when people assume that there is only one universal set of beauty standards. You see it in both cartoon women (due to lack of imagination by artists) and real women (due to lack of imagination by casting agents)

Conservatives are pretty much all Social Darwinists: you have to believe that, 1) capitalism is a meritocracy 2) the positive traits that cause merit are genetic, in order to think that our current system of letting huge segments of the population die prematurely from poverty is a good idea. And both of the above points are obviously false if you think about either of them for more than 15 seconds

As long as political dissidence is widespread enough, they'll only ever be able to use the data against random specific scapegoats, much like how a few random individuals were targeted and made into a legal spectacle over internet piracy while piracy in general continued unabated

And yet banning burqas does nothing to help women. People should be allowed to wear whatever they want. The best way as a society to help Muslim women who are being oppressed by their husbands is the same as helping anyone who is oppressed/abused by their spouses: create social safety nets so that they can escape the relationship without worrying about being homeless

The accepted wisdom is actually that using gloves increases the risk of damaging the book because you lose finger sensitivity and this outweighs any concerns about finger oils on the book

Getting people's attention in the self-publishing world is going to require some creativity and problem-solving. AI generated cover art is going to be ubiquitous in self publishing right now because it's the easiest, lowest effort solution to the problem of cover art. Your nephew is going to need to come up with a better solution if he wants people to notice his book in the heap of thousands of books

I'd recommend using something else for the cover art. It looks pretty clearly AI and when people see AI cover art they assume that the content is also low-effort or that the text might be AI generated too

In the name of "picking one's battles" I choose not to beef with moderate Christians, moderate Muslims, etc. if we're on the same page enough politically.

I'm guessing Huffpost has a poor understanding of what "brutal backlash" should actually look like in this case

The venn diagram of said men and men whose entire personality is "why won't women date me?? it's so unfair :(" is very close to a circle

This is the solution to AI generated art, not trying to expand copyright laws to include "style" or whatever else can be algorithmically "stolen" from artists. Expanding copyright protections will only ever benefit corporations who can afford to hire top lawyers and will never help small-time artists.

It's a form of metonym where one identity-defining practice (eating granola) becomes a symbol for general type of person (New Age hippie types) who also tend to be antivax because of their obsession with "natural" things

They also self-identify as happy because it's seen as both a status symbol and as an important indicator of being "a good Christian." Admitting any unhappiness would lead to being ostracized and shamed for not loving Jesus enough

The top two causes of death are heart attack and cancer. I would MUCH prefer heart attack so I'm taking this as good news

Are you calling him a pedo based on him holding hands with his daughter or do you have some other reason to believe that? Parents holding hands with their own children is considered normal in most cultures including the US

I don't think they're intentionally going to kill off their customer base, which they rely on for money. The whole point of addicts is they're great repeat customers. Fentanyl is added to stuff because it's cost-effective (i.e. it takes very little to get you high) not because it's poison

The woman in the video is quoting a tweet (also by a woman) from a few years ago. In both cases, I think the women are self-aware and are making a joke. The male response, then, is just making the same joke a second time with less subtly.
