Only had one cat that didn't take that hint... ended up clasping his ear between my teeth - not hard, just firmly... until he rethought all his life choices. Got the point through to him though, biting is not fun. They legit just do not realise that you don't have fur to protect your skin and get carried away.

Ahw, my boy Seb used to do this too... every morning just a cat trotting beside me to the bus stop, stopping at the corner back from the main road but where he could see me safely. And then he'd coming running every afternoon when I got off the bus and he'd walk me home from that safe spot. I miss him.

As someone who took on a 17 year old who had been left exactly the same way, someone go get him - they are the best and should totally be able to live with a loving family for the end of life. And may that 'person' who abandoned him have things rot and fall off.
