i think youre over thinking this. they are just page numbers. if you had a collection of documents that you labeled 6,14,9,2,e,8675309.... etc how do you suppose you yourself would know which page was which? Honestly this is why early school can be so frustrating for a lot of kids, especially neuro atypical kids.
Teaching things wrong for the sake of not confusing kids only confuses them more in the long run. Negative numbers exists and 4-5= -1. You cant say 4-5=0 just for your class because you arent teaching negatives yet. If a kid asks what 4-5 is you just say well that would be -1 but you guys dont need to worry about that yet.

I adopted a hamster from a research lab in college. She was legendary at parties. One day she was in her ball while i was changing the air vents which were in the floor and i heard a loud thunk and came back to see my roomates cat staring into the vent. Went full panic teying to find the key to the basement for our janky rental and ended up slicing into some duct work to retrieve her from the AC unit under the house. Before i got her back i could hear her just rolling around in the AC unit total
