I re-read Ballards drowned world recently and it has a forward by Martin Amis which sort of applies here- 'fictional divination will always be hopelessly haphazard. The unfolding of world-historical events is itself haphazard (and therefore unaesthetic), and "the future" is in a sense defined by its messy inscrutability.'
I'm going to check that out tomorrow on the drive to work!
