I did, and I'm only 34. It wasn't that long ago.
Multiple times during my life, the only way for me to get to sleep has been to repeatedly say to myself "You can die whenever you want".
My cat is 14. He also does this exact same thing (hugs my hand), but otherwise he will almost never cuddle and never sits on anyone's lap.
