Unfortunately, I have found this to not be an uncommon situation (but this is a very severe example). I & some of my friends have had this.
I learnt from books and James Freedman, but there are a whole bunch of resources. Best way is to practice on a dummy or friend.
Basically, yeah. Though people know it's happening (generally), and they're okay with it (generally).
I'm a professional magician, so I learnt from James Freedman how to pickpocket. It involves takings watches, wallets, ties, phones, etc.
18 I did a lot, as I trained to be a stage pickapocket. I frequently stole people's wallets and moved it to different pockets. I'm a dick :)
I still like the fact that the puppet backs away slowly.
