Not only was it physically painful, it hurt me psychologically. Great way to tell your kid "you're ugly, we need to fix you" and reverse the "everyone's beautiful, what matters is on the inside" message that was being pounded into me as a kid. I have some fun breathing issues thanks to them moving my jaw with a herbst device as well that I can't afford to get figured out any further than I already know.
Agreed that there are serious reasons to have your teeth fixed, and if you're an adult getting your teeth corrected for whatever reason, I have no qualms with that. My point is forcing children to get them done purely for cosmetic reasons, which is what was done to me. No one cared that I didn't want them no matter what I said, they still put me through it. That's why I bring up foot binding; it's not a 1-to-1 thing, but the it's a procedure done for "societal beautification", primarily.
Same here. People act like I'm insane when I compare cosmetic orthodontics for kids to foot binding. It's become this weird ritual, it's gross to me.
I also have shingles right now, as a 28 year old! Getting stupid lucky though, not in any real pain right now, ibuprofen and the antiviral are doing good work. Probably got it from stress + a weakened immune system

I'm stuck in Indiana, apparently we toss our recyclables if they have so much as a little bit of liquid left in them, as that's "contamination"
Stuck in the US, I wish we had this. Taken a couple vacations to Norway, Sweden, and The Netherlands, it was incredible being somewhere that cared. Wish I could just transplant myself amongst y'all, alas.
