Not necessarily. I've maxed the run portion of the PT test in one of my pairs of boots before; boots these days can be pretty lightweight.
For more specific advice, go in REI and get them to fit you and recommend a boot based on your location and weather and such.
Anything by Salomon or Vasque. I personally wear old Asolos, but I can't recommend them after the drop in quality from the factory move.
Real backpacking, like hiking 8 miles a day for a period of time, or hostel hopping while touring through Europe or South America?
I'll step up to bat: when I'm backpacking, like she probably is, I only bring boots and flip flops. Saves weight.
