Where I live, the fine for drink driving is less than using public transit without a valid ticket. Go figure.
Eat cleverly: if locals buy from markets, you do too, if they eat out because that's cheaper (ie Singapore), that's what you need to do
Specifics include: hostels/couchsurfing, buses not planes, staying in places longer not spending more money on travel...
I spent 8 months in Europe, even did a month in North America and came home (Australia) with change.
