To my understanding, it's just a term used to describe the phenomenon. So it looks like the contention stems from semantics.

In fact, I would say the term toxic masculinity if anything is defending men, just like rape culture is defending women.

one time i was working retail and a blind kid came in to ask if we had his lost phone. i asked him where he saw it last. not my proudest.
Grew up in anchorage too. can confirm, grew up in igloo, had moose (needed) for pets and walked uphill 5 miles in snow to school
