Nice! Exactly, huge companies like Facebook depend on it, and even new unicorn startups like Slack. PHP 7 is awesome and bright future, IMO

Haha, that's good practice. Take a look at jQuery UI (a supplemental library built on jQuery). It's great for pre-made stuff like that.

Just seems belittling for a language that powers Facebook and various other huge companies.

I agree. This advice is bad in general. Leaves out Java (one of the most lucrative languages) and isn't really good for learning either.

Start with a simple JS library like jQuery. Tons of info on the web and jQuery allows you to do almost everything you need easily.

Freelancing is very flexible and you can make a lot of money. For consistent jobs though you need good experience and a good portfolio.

I write PHP for a living too and do very well for myself with it. What problems are you having with it? It's a great backend web dev lang.

I love Lua! Very underutilized language. Corona SDK (x-platform mobile game dev kit) uses it which is awesome. Wish I got to use it more.

Like others have said, being able to take a mock to conception with JS/CSS/HTML is very valuable. Also Git for version control.

if you aren't knowledgable about most of the languages you're putting on the list. IMO this is just another bad programming post. (2/2)

The problem I have is the OP trashing various languages in a post aimed a newcomers. Let them decide what to use, especially (1/2)

Well said. I make a ton of money writing... PHP! OP is clueless, IMO. Gave very bad advice and left off Java (red flag).

Agreed, especially coming from a "programmer" who describes PHP as "It's like JavaScript", and that Laravel makes it more "modern."

"Doesn't run in the browser" "for people who want to write HTML"? What? Very odd description of a language like PHP from a "programmer"(2/2)

Thank you for pointing this out. Actually, op's description of PHP leads me to believe he doesn't even understand what it's for. (1/2)

"Fun?" PHP is a perfectly adequate enterprise-ready development language. I write it for a living at a fortune 100 company.
