This also works on faded, black plastic trim on cars... though you should probably use a heat gun, not a torch.
They likely waited to get it detailed until the kids were old enough to keep things relatively clean. Might as well have a positive outlook.
That works too, though I say it isn't too hard as someone who just soldered for the first time last weekend.
If the battery is dead, the save is long gone anyway. (at least in the games that use the battery for saves like Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokemon)
