In Washington State, if you have a problem with the department of licensing website you are given a number to call. If the number of people waiting for an operator goes over 100, FOR THE WHOLE STATE, it says they're experiencing a high call volume and hangs up on you. I never managed to get in the queue. Nobody I've talked to has. Nobody on the many reddit threads has. It is a completely useless service. Fortunately the local DOL offices have a completely different system and they can fix things

I had an old dryer like that in my last place that I repaired several times through a combination of ordering spare parts online and watching youtube tutorials. It worked great. Where I am now, we have a fancy new Samsung dryer. It sucks ass. Never once have my clothes been fully dry.

Well this sure turned out to be exactly what I was hoping for. What a nice treat!

I make a fair bit of compost for my farm (like a couple hundred pounds of finished compost a week) and let me tell you... bioplastics are just plastic. They do not break down unless you treat them with synthetic enzymes or heat them far beyond what an actual compost pile can produce. I've run all manner of greenwashed junk through my piles just to see what happens, and not once seen any significant breakdown.

Some of those MK Ultra subjects were subjected to months of drug induced waking nightmares. Literally strapped to a bed with a helmet over their head, loaded with drugs with doom loop audio playing 24/7, just to see what would happen. Turns out, fatal psychosis. Who would have thought.

Transit systems create gargantuan positive externalities for the localities they service, so you will always have underinvestment if the you don't capture the externality by having the locality foot the bill for building the infrastructure.

IIRC a big problem for the MTA (and a ton of transit systems in the US) is that they have used debt to finance system expansion, and thus revenues go almost entirely to servicing debt and very little is left over for operating costs. The correct way to organize a transit system is to have the locality pay for new infrastructure from general funds, and then turn it over to the transit organization to operate. That way revenues are matched to operating costs, not decades old bad financing schemes.

It's interesting how different this hits knowing that they are conscripts doing mandatory service. A president marching with professional volunteer soldiers would read as a grimy PR stunt to me, but this has a cool "we're in this together" vibe.

Residential use is a tiny fraction of CA water use. They could cover the increased water easily by making a few large corporate farmers use modern irrigation practices.

If you have any love for English prose, you owe it to yourself to read James Baldwin's writing. Sure, he was a brilliant man writing on important matters, but *how* he wrote is a wonder to behold.

A lot of urban planners in the later 20th century decided they didn't want to deal with the hassle of cleaning up fruit and seeds from street trees, so they only planted male trees. So now we have cities with far higher tree pollen counts than forests.

I'm a 100kg man, and 155kg is just a bit under my deadlift PR. I blame... err... leverages. That's it...

My first dog was some sort of border collie mix. Wicked smart without any mischief. Only got eight years with him though. Boo cancer.

Non-Disclosure Agreements do not serve the public interest and should be banned as a condition of settling any dispute. If you want people to sign a time limited NDA when they test your product or read your script, so you can have a fair shot to get to market, sure. If you want to shut people up about your scummy behavior, straight to jail.

When I take edibles to sleep I usually do 2.5mg and sometimes that makes me uncomfortably high. I can't even imagine 1000

Yup. Shortly after my 18th birthday, "This isn't your home anymore, you need to leave." She wonders why I don't talk to her.

They do this every 20-30 years like clockwork, since the late 1800s. It's gonna be addictive.

So they can go flying into the bike path and kill someone? Breakaway bolts on light poles are car centric brain rot.

Good thing I'm bald, because this comment was beginning to make me think I might be autistic!
