pulling pedal back before setting up is obviously to get a slightly longer arc for the setoff, to get a slightly longer first pedal push.
rolling back will pull the pedals back on a freewheel, while rolling forward/coasting will make the clicky noise with no pedal movement.
That's what the abstract is for... though you can also skip real fast to the conclusion when the bellend of a writer has written a crap one.

Meanwhile, in LMP/GT, they made refuelling slower than changing tyres by limiting the number of mechanics around the car. that and lockouts
