Right And the fact that the automotive industry lobbied politicians that helped shape the current infrastructure we have today, so that we were more reliant on cars than we needed to be. But it's one of many problems that caused this urban sprawl (not just the size which we poorly managed) and I'm really not able to give it all the detail it needs while having to stay under 500 characters in a comment section.

Problem is infrastructure & horifically terrible planning. You have to drive way, way longer and further on average in the US than in most other countries and even though it's a recognized issue.. nothing is being done to resolve that. Just tons of wasted space.
