I always feel working for unis is fruitless compared to private / startup research

Others in control of your money makes you vunrable. You can be fired or a government can fail. Life is about bumps you can't avoid them 2/3
Yes and no. You need multiple assest classes to protect yourself from government collapse same with only having a job it's very risky. 1/2
