The first thing you should always do immediately after recognizing you were wrong is question every other belief you hold that is tangentially related to the thing you were wrong about. Otherwise you aren't growing from the experience.
I think the strategy by Democrats was never to get what they knew Republicans would never give, rather make Republicans publicly show they are at fault when a specific bad thing happens.
