Can only think of two reasons. Some folk seem to hate him cause of his tendency to be a smart alecky 'Erm, actually' know-it-all. Can be annoying but I don't think it's a good reason to hate him. The other reason might be the time he went on Big Think to denounce being a atheist. A lot of atheist took offense to it. Less people saw it (because it was under an obscure blog post by the Friendly Atheist), but he later clarified that he's in no way against atheism and supports what atheists do.

Another semi-downside I've found is just being a chronic daydreamer. Can get pretty distracting when you spend hours creating random stories/scenarios in your head, when trying to get work done or especially when trying to go to sleep.
