At Comicon there was a company selling this trick for $25. It turned out to be a black sewing string and a glob of wax.

Sometime around 4-5 yo I realized the belt wasn't hurting anymore, but I kept up the theatrics when hit so that they didn't upgrade.

I also get a better sense of a town/city staying in homes/apartments than in a random hotel, Risk of being murdered notwithstanding. ;)
