One nice thing is they were aimed at serious movie buffs, so some of them have awesome box sets (like my Alien collector's edition box)
Also, you can only fit 30-60 mins on one side, so most movies you need to flip the disc over halfway through like it's a vinyl music album.
They look like giant DVDs/CDs, but the picture is analog, not digital (later movies have digital surround sound though)
I had already gotten bored of watching Goku screaming while taking 3 episodes to throw one punch long before it ever got on Cartoon Network
In Hawaii it was 1989. Local TV station (Fox affiliate, I think) used to air it late 80's/early 90's.
