Afaik they can extend, it's just that they can't retract them all the way like cats do. There's still some movement though.

Meaning I need a military. Also some defense against invaders, preferably mechanical and not live-dwarven, would be nice.

Eh, 6k ain't that much. I'm not really a hardcore gamer, but during the last, what, 6 months I already got 1k hours in TF2.
I once saw a guy with 80k+ hours in CS:Source, and ~50k across a couple other CS versions. Can't find source though.
