So a popular fan theory is that everything that has happened to Shinji HAS happened to Shinji. So time spent in the Super Robot Wars games, where he does get to work with Team Dai Gurren, actually happened. The theory ultimately concludes that this is why Shinji is able to take control of Unit 01 to free Rei from Sahaquiel at the end of the second rebuild.
But they ONLY had 700 mil to work with!
