I survived pneumonia when I was that age, with multiple antibiotics, lots of hot toddies, and more sleep. One day at a time. Be patient.

It "sounds cruel" but the calf wasn't poked, had to be weaned eventually, & the iron rusted to more extreme barbs.
It's a farming implement. Farmer's would put them in a calf's septum so mother's wouldn't let them nurse.
