In both the anime and games, the Pokémon will just choose not to fight if they don't respect their trainer. Their happiness is tracked in the games. They enjoy competing, eating certain foods, and being groomed. You play a role more like a boxing coach than a dog fighter in the games. The movies and show are centered around working with your Pokémon, and the people that try to force them to do things against their will are always presented as evil.

I don't know why people are downvoting you. He clearly kicked an SUV and flipped people off a week and a half prior to be being killed. Everyone knows that in the US such actions are punishable by being pistol whipped in the head repeatedly and getting shot in the back multiple times. It's just common sense. /sI haven't seen anyone claim he was just an observer. He's claimed to have directed traffic, filmed, protected a woman being assaulted, and been murdered in the street.
