Same. I’m American with German ancestry that came during the war for independence and English - not sure of that timeline. I have wondered if that’s a common thing in either of those cultures to feel uncomfortable with compliments?

I tried to find some comfort for you in taking a moment to dredge the annals of science for your request- but as this post was pulled from the bottom of a garbage pile on the internet, the article I provided may not meet your exacting standards. I work in mental health. It is very hard to get anywhere with forcing adults to get help. I understand the fear of having a target on your back – and the landlord probably feels the same. If the tenant has asked for a reasonable accommodation, it really ties the landlord’s hands. It’s much better for the kitten to find a family. Outside mom cats are focused on survival - they get pregnant so often, the previous litter of kittens face a dangerous survival situation themselves just after they are weaned. Without someone providing cat food, many die. Even if they are given cat food, predators often kill them.
