Most folks in the US are only a few weeks away from homelessness. They can't weather a storm. There's also almost never been any government assistance for food in the US. Even at the best of times food assistance could take a few months to qualify for. Now? It basically doesn't happen. A full general strike could see more americans end up homeless and starving than the entire population of france.
The problem comes down to having enough to eat. Making things better in general is a good thing but it comes with sacrifice. A big strike means a ton of people will get fired and their families end up on the street. You'll be hard pressed to convince people to starve their children for what might only be a promise of a better future.

Our police are better armed then the militaries of some countries. They also love to kill people. All the stuff about George Floyd and Breonna Taylor are just the ones that made the news. Those sorts of killing are common in the US. Has been for the entirety of everyone's lives. It's hard to fight back when there are murderers with badges and prisons.
The system was built bad from the ground up precisely to make it hard to have representation in government. It's hard to use the rules of a system meant to oppress to overturn that same system.
This isn't my first site collapse and it's always sad to see. This is why the "just stop using twitter" mentality didn't work too well. People aren't giving up a site, they're giving up a community. Many people have already, many more will do so in the coming weeks, but many more will simply slowly stop using imgur. We'll just slowly drift away until the site has almost none of it's older accounts still active. I still miss tumblr from 12 years ago, I'm gonna miss imgur as well.
