When I was a kid my parents would only give so many coins so we would just stop it the second before it went down and keep redoing it.

Granted he choked Bart a lot, but he had a lot of moments like the one above as well.
In Homer's defense, he did some pretty selfless things as well. One instance is giving up millions so Maggie could keep her teddy bear.
Naturally there are mistakes and bad times, but that's kind of the point. No parent is perfect
Overall I think he shows a man who is trying to understand his son who is nothing like him, but raise him right at the same time.
I feel like that's a pretty big box for a 46 inch tv.
Buckle up though, it's quite a ride
