The bonds in nylon are chemically the same as the bonds in proteins (peptide or amide bonds) and the most common, nylon 66, breaks down into adipic acid and hexamine diamine. Life can also break down polyesters into the acid and water starting materials, but the starting materials can be more toxic depending on which polyester (PET is worse than PCL for example).

The problem with glass is that it is heavy (and breaks). It is so heavy, that it can make shipping more expensive. If food stuffs that needed a container were dispensed from a bulk, you could use whatever container you wanted/needed, so glass would be viable. Dispensing from bulk unfortunately increases risk of spoilage since people would need to seal their own.

If you add UV blockers to the plastic, which they probably would for an exterior application, none of the UV would reach the gas. Visible is rarely strong enough to degrade anything.
Well, if it is butane and water, the butane is less dense and would rest on the top of the water. Inverting the bottle creates mixing which kicks off the reaction. That said, I'm not sure exactly what is reacting to make that much gas.
