There are areas (and other cities in Quebec) that are much more 'severe' about non-locals. Sheesh. We're all living on planet Earth, folks.
There were too many times when I tried speaking French that got such a negative reaction that I gave up and just stuck with English.
Keep in mind that Quebecois is markedly different from true French; coworker from France has difficulty at times understanding the locals
