I’m 99% sure you were looking at a contract to have Amazon as your publisher. Like, to have them do your marketing and editing for you. Tons of authors sell hard copy and digital through Amazon and keep all the rights to everything.

Wait’ll she finds out who Trump’s first Secretary of labor Alex Acosta was offering a sweetheart plea deal to in 2007 when he was US attorney for the southern district of Florida.

Not only that but the peer reviews are done for free by other volunteer academics. The editing is done by the author after feedback from the peer reviewers. The only value from the journal is name recognition. Publishers are nothing but a fucking rentier class in academia.

I absolutely recognize that as a healthy relatively young person I’m privileged to not worry as much as an elderly immunocompromised person. At the same time, we should recognize that outcomes are so much better now. My elderly father in law, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, has had covid twice and rode it out at home with paxlovid and bed rest. If he got it in 2020 it would surely have been a much grimmer story.

We gave up early on and lost way more people than we needed to. And in those first few months there was a slim hope of actually keeping it contained. But it’s been globally endemic more for years. It’s never going away. We can’t realistically expect everyone to mask forever, and more crucially, vaccines and good meds like paxlovid are available now. And even the dipshits who refuse vaccines and spread the virus at least contribute to herd immunity afterwards. …

Honestly, Bush Sr was fine, esp compared to the rest. He was a one-term president bc he supported some modest tax increases to balance the budget, and this pissed off the Reaganites. But otoh you forgot the OG, Republican trash Nixon

That’s not how this works at all. President can, at best, refuse to enforce federal laws (like federal weed laws, which everyone has been ignoring in states that legalized it). President definitely can’t stop states from enforcing their state-level laws on abortion or weed. Unless he’s going to send in the national guard to free anyone jailed for abortion in a red state. And that would be a huge deal that would have repercussions far beyond electability politics.

The other day I saw one in the wild with a bumper sticker that said “tesla 👍 elon 👎” and the driver was a ~70yo lady.

I agree with your general sentiment but Minnesota has had many Democratic governors. And here’s the map for Reagan’s 1984 reelection:

This would be more convincing if it wasn’t in response to a story about literally nobody caring about this woman, for years!

There are a few places in the world (Brazil, Myanmar) where dolphins have learned to work with local fishermen and share the catch.

True. One time my poker buddy was over and was cleaning me out. Luckily gambling is illegal so I drugged him and stole his kidney.

Yeah, but it also seems like police forces aren't getting rid of bad cops without the public outrage. Blue wall of silence lets shit fester.
