At the same time, we should recognize that outcomes are so much better now. My elderly father in law, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, has had covid twice and rode it out at home with paxlovid and bed rest. If he got it in 2020 it would surely have been a much grimmer story.
We gave up early on and lost way more people than we needed to. And in those first few months there was a slim hope of actually keeping it contained. But it’s been globally endemic more for years. It’s never going away. We can’t realistically expect everyone to mask forever, and more crucially, vaccines and good meds like paxlovid are available now. That’s not how this works at all. President can, at best, refuse to enforce federal laws (like federal weed laws, which everyone has been ignoring in states that legalized it). President definitely can’t stop states from enforcing their state-level laws on abortion or weed. Unless he’s going to send in the national guard to free anyone jailed for abortion in a red state. And that would be a huge deal that would have repercussions far beyond electability politics.
