Yeah... so hi imgur... I was kinda wondering if you maybe want to go out sometime

My hatred is valid but turning it into public policy is not

Looks like a skit. Probably in middle of cutting it even shorter judging by the hair already on his neck.

We have learners (L) and recently passed (P) signs here in the UK. It's expected you take the L plates off after passing and replace them with P plates if you're not confident.

Unfortunately having either on your car just makes most other drivers even worse because they're desperately trying to get in front of you.

And you're so deep in your propaganda that you think everything the CCP does is some secret trick to somehow oppress their people even more, instead of a genuine attempt to improve it's citizens lives.

You don't even realise you're doing it. Start with an unproven speculation, critical of something you've been told is bad, then trundle out the same tired talking points when challenged, and finally resort name calling and swearing. Textbook.

Straight to the name calling I see.

Which Americans exactly have a higher standard of living?

Is it the Amazon workers pissing in bottles because they can't have a toilet break? Or Starbucks employees fired for trying unionise? Or perhaps those bankrupted medical debt? Or any of the 40m people living in poverty according to the census bureau?

No, of course, it's the group you belong to, which is why you have every reason perpetuate propaganda talking points.

So taking away people's motivation to protest by *checks notes* solving their financial insecurity, is bad?

Yeah the CCP is autocratic for sure but at least they're using some carrot as well as stick.

America has proven that's not even necessary, they're just suppressing protests with riot police and deporting undesirable citizens.

But that's not oppression because the oligarchy gets a new front man every few years and you have the 'freedom' to choose how they fuck you.

But they're all terrorists obviously, especially the children /s

Wonder where they learned that talking point?

But they are actually employed and paid. Ideally everyone would be able to do something meaningful and engaging but I'd take busywork over poverty.

You Imgurians are a contentious people

I see you've misunderstood how this works. You see, the importance of your opinion is based on how much money you have, so it's actually a very popular and not insane opinion.

Everyone complains about English being hard to pronounce as if that isn't the best thing about it.

Pronounce the words we stole from your language and just fucking send it for the rest of them, we'll figure it out.

You wanna pass as a native speaker? Just claim to have a regional accent from the other end of the country, who's gonna know?

I've served drunk Glaswegians at a bar, so just do whatever you want.

Guys guess what, I've made stool that if you flip up like 7 individual bits of wood it becomes a much more fragile than normal chair.

I don't know about what bullshit American's have to deal with but I'm British and I often say free WiFi when I just mean guest WiFi.

A bunch of places near me require you to book via the app/site but don't have available guest WiFi. And mobile signal is always shit for some reason as well.

Black better protects against UV better by absorbing all of it.
White will let some through and reflect some.

Wearing black will give you hot clothes, wearing white will give you slightly less hot skin.

A light layer over a dark layer works well and shiny silver will work best but it's a weird look

Yeah, because Bobby short legs (the older brother) got the more important French bits. Even then, Billy immediately invaded France again.

All to say, France was considered the cultural centre for the Norman kings and England was seen as a backwater they had to keep in line so they could extract wealth. It was outside forces that eventually limited them to the island.

Fair point, but it still highlights how much they still considered themselves French, and France as their source of power

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They didn't really, and even when they did, it wasn't by choice.
William the conqueror saw England as a stepping stone to a European empire so very much tried to keep and expand his French lands.

Richard the lionheart spent like 6 months in Britain total and taxed the living hell out of Britain to fund his European wars and Crusades.

The first King after the invasion to speak English was Henry IV in like 1400.

That's textbook colonial exploitation.

And you're right again when you point out revolutions are historically violent, messy and full of suffering. But it's also true that in every single instance you can look back at the decisions of the ruling elite, where they chose to stick to the status quo. When put in a challenging position they opted for suppression instead of controlled change. And almost universally their argument was that the current system offers stability so don't rock the boat.

You're right, it hasn't gotten worse yet. But our capacity to make it so much worse has grown exponentially. In our drive for constant growth we have pushed societal systems to the limit, no reduncy, no contingency, everything just enough, just in time. And yet the system always demands more efficiency and more growth. We can keep patting ourselves on the back right up to the point it falls down around us.

I would hardly call a system that caused the bloodiest century in history and global warming stable. It might appear stable in the west, on the order of one or two lifetimes but we've seen more change in the last 300 years then we did in the previous 4000. Continuous exponential growth is unsustainable and that so called stability will fall down around us if we blindly keep going. Also worth noting that stability is only an advantage if you're not currently being oppresed.

I'm talking about the difference between thought and action. In order to imagine a better world you have to imagine the old one gone. Then, completely separately, you decide what actions to take and what to compromise. Conversatives will conflate thought and action to stifle any imagination of a better future, as if talking about a potential world without private landlords makes you essentially Stalin. It's just a continuation of McCarthyism into the information age.

The original is common refrain used to maintain the status quo and ensure that people either fear change or see it as too intractable a problem. It is couched in metaphor and common sense but lacks any of the rigor of proper critical theory. It tells you that even imaging or discussing a world outside of the narrow confines of the existing hegemony is tantamount to violent revolution and murder.
