Aussie, Social Worker, figuring out how to be a good parent and spouse. CODA (mother and father are Deaf). Love Sci-Fi and Fantasy, cats, music, tea, cooking, and craft (clay and sewing).

Not necessarily. Depends on when alcohol was consumed during pregnancy. The physical features are just one part of a range of brain damage

It sounds like pretty typical Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder to me, sounds like his parents had it too.

/2 step to getting help. If Al Anon works for you, great! If it doesn't, I would strongly encourage seeing a trauma informed therapist.

I'm really glad you're getting help. Al Anon doesn't work for everyone, I felt like it didn't work in my situation but it was my first /1

I'm not sure, but are you quoting the mighty boosh? I have a vague memory of this being said to Old Gregg.

I guess it depends where you live. Eg in the Northern Territory of Australia, beaches are usually pretty quiet & u might see 1 other person

Parents can become decent ones. Most parents don't set out to harm their kids. A lot just don't know how to do better.

With the help of people around them, a good supportive community, access to practical parenting advice and mentoring from others, bad

Because schools are closed, childcares are closed, and they still need food on the table.

Even in this very thread, there are people talking about having to neglect their kids to go to work (8 year old left home with younger kids)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Not necessarily. A lot of good people become lousy parents when they don't have support, don't have skills, and don't have resources.

No visibility. It's an abuser's perfect scenario. I'm glad the Australian govt is giving millions to family violence services right now

Somewhere safe to go.

This is one reason why schools are still open but optional in Australia. Kids of essential workers, and kids who need safety should have

Or for causing grievous bodily harm... FASD is no joking matter.

I know a lot of people who have lost jobs/had their hours reduced because of this. Worries about the economy are valid at this time.

I'd probably pull over, and run out of the car screaming. Then compose myself, and get a stick to coax it out

Child of Deaf Adults, so Auslan was my first language. Interpreters who use expression are just doing their job. It is awesome to watch tho

Like listening to someone reading in monotone. Meaning is conveyed not only through the actions, but facial expression too. I'm a CODA
