Argon is a lot cheaper. Also you might break the demijohn dropping them in. You would need a whole lot of marbles for that headspace. Whatever works though.
Seems like a lot of air in there. Probably a fair amount of CO2 but you might want to consider a smaller demi John. I found mead was a bit aggressive to begin with and needs some time to mellow. If you are leaving it for a while with that much head space you might want to consider knocking the air out with argon or something to stop it oxidising.

Worth pointing out that in the UK at least they also benefitted from free education, free health service which worked, low housing costs which meant a home could be run on just one wage. I'd happily be nostalgic about the work ethic of Boomers if we could also have access to the other stuff.
