Safe to say, Norwegians are very ambivalent towards Hamsun. One one hand, he IS one of our Big 4 authors (Bjørnson, Ibsen, Hamsun & Lie -- some things from school still stick 40+ years later). On the other, he WAS a nazi sympathizer.

Presumably, this is in Svalbard, which is technically Norwegian territory rather than mainland Norway itself. A polar bear in mainland Norway would definitely be headline news there.

In Norwegian, there is a specific term for this: "Bikkja i bakken" - the dog on the slope. Comes from ski jumping where invariably a dog would get out on the slope at some point. :-)
