The amount of water you go through is determining factor of cost. Tankless is better for a little use, tanks are better for a lot of use.
You need at least 200amp service for electric. I was lucky enough to already have that, but needed new plumbing.
Supposedly they're cheaper because you're no longer having to keep a tank of water hot but I cant prove that. Retrofitting was pretty $$$.
Tankless. It hurt my wallet real bad on the next electric bill, but the first week of having endless hot showers was soothing.
