Actually there are experiments using some kinds of what are essentially transgender mice (four core genotypes, for example) that help provide info on the biological basis of sex differences. Some things come from being XX vs XY (vs others) and some things come from estrogens/progesterones vs androgens. Sometimes the chromosomes and the hormones interact. Adoptions is such a worthwhile consideration, but @OP if it’s a genetic disease and you have the [considerable] funds or insurance coverage to do IVF, it may be possible to do genetic testing of embryos prior to transfer. It’s a whole ordeal even beyond the expense. May not be feasible for a million reasons, but I wanted to mention the option
