The car as its approaching is short and blue, and long and red as its moving away; a play on the doppler effect usually associated with cars
the inverse is true as well for red. Things moving away from us (such as galaxies in our expanding universe) are redshifted.
blue light has a shorter wavelength (higher frequency) than red light, so approaching objects (think astronomy) are technically blueshifted
The doppler effect compresses or lengthens waves if their source is approaching or leaving. for sound, this is pitch, for light; color.
